I love love love shakshuka - though we always have it for brunch, and in our house it's called 'mild hangover eggs' (because I first encountered it in a list of hangover remedies, but it's far too involved to make with a real hangover!). The way you're planning to do it sounds lovely and more substantial, so good for dinner. Mine's simpler/lazier - just onions garlic and red pepper chopped and fried with smoked paprika and chilli flakes, two tins of tomatoes added and reduced down a bit, a tin of butter beans chucked in and the eggs simmered on top, all served over toasted crusty bread.

Is that like the baked eggs advert on the tv/radio at the minute? It looks really good Grin but I've never made it! Sounds like it would be really tasty with the potato cubes, make it and let me know how it goes!

MrsMotherHen · 13/09/2018 13:35

yes baked eggs @SpadesOfGlory I have been wanted to try them forever!

that sound good aswell sounds like perfect hangover cure i must remeber that! @LisaSimpsonsbff

I use lamb mince spiced with cinnamon and cumin, or chorizo and paprika in the tomato sauce for mine.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 13/09/2018 13:37

Hope you enjoy it tonight, motherhen! I can only ever get the eggs a good runniness if I cook them with the lid on the pan, btw - not sure whether that's what your recipe says to do?

TheReturnoftheSmartArse · 13/09/2018 13:38

I do the Hairy Bikers' version. Really popular in our house, even with ultra fussy DD2 and DS, who usually survive on a diet of pasta and noodles.

BinkyandBunty · 13/09/2018 13:39

We make them a lot. Always served with bread to mop everything up.

We have a few variations on the go - salmon is a favourite, with a bit of saffron in the sauce.

ToesInWater · 13/09/2018 13:40

I love it for brunch. Onions, peppers, chorizo, paprika and a tin of tomatoes. Needs naice bread to dunk 😂

Methe · 13/09/2018 13:42

I just bung in a load of froze veg, tinned tomatoes and some spice and cook in a pan for ten minutes then put the eggs in and put in the oven for 25 minutes. Couldn’t be any easier! It’s a fan 5:2 meal too.

MrsMotherHen · 13/09/2018 13:45

I was thinking a nice bread too the kids would definitely need some bread aswell DS3 especially sometimes he can be a bit fussy so he will 100% eat crusty bread dunked in the saucey bit and eat the potatoes maybe. DD1 will eat anything tomatoey Grin

I'm in a ME country & the dc & I often have shakshouka for weekend brunch. Ds & I were just saying the other day it would be genius to add bacon (we won't be getting that here though Grin).

I often put red kidney beans in mine to make it substantial. TONS of chilli unless dd2 is having it - she's a chilli wimp. Dash of liquid smoke. Eggs separated & whites used for something else the dog because no-one likes sloppy slimy white. Tomatoes cooked down thoroughly & a glop of tomato paste because I use fresh, ripe tomatoes which aren't as concentrated as tinned.

Yum. Also feels vaguely healthy because of all the veg!

HappyEverIftar · 13/09/2018 13:53

Another one living in the ME and the versions I've had here are much less yolky, more of a scrambled egg stirred through a thin tomato sauce.

If I'm making it, I like Nigella's recipe, I like the sauce. Enjoy OP, get some crusty bread to dunk.

hallodarknessmyoldfriend · 13/09/2018 13:56

I always add chorizo to mine. Sooooo goood.

BlackInk · 13/09/2018 14:52

I made it for the first time the other day using the Nadia Hussein recipe I saw on TV:
thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/nadiya-hussains-smoky-spinach-shakshuka
Really nice - we had it with cous cous...

scaryteacher · 13/09/2018 16:55

Every Monday night for meat free Monday. Like SmartArse I do the Hairy Bikers version from Chicken and Egg. My cayenne pepper is very pungent, so I apply copious amounts of natural yoghurt to the top of my plate to cool it down.

Cloudyapples · 13/09/2018 16:57

I make it all the time but mine is super simple - just two peppers, one onion, chilli and herbs, tin of tomatoes. Then when that’s is bubbling I make little spaces to crack eggs in and partially cover then til they are cooked. Serve with a hunk of bread - yum!

MrsMotherHen · 13/09/2018 17:22

yummmmmm been to the local bakery to get a crusty loaf Wink

shakshuka has anyone made it?

My favourite weekend brunch! Yours looks great (and is making me very hungry).

PrincessIsAUnicorn · 13/09/2018 17:31

Ooooh, that is something I can do on the hob, it looks amazing 🤤

MrsMotherHen · 13/09/2018 17:56

holey shit!!!! it was bloody good!

kids didnt eat it but they ate the other bits served with it so next time they can have meatballs or some chicken/sasuages (any meat) to go with it. Husband loved it aswell so was a good dish to add to our teatimes. Really cheap to make aswell Grin

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/09/2018 18:07

I love it

I never add any meat to it just tomatoes, onions and peppers and poach the eggs not stir the egg in

sometimes add a few kidney beans and depends on my mood how much paprika and chilli I add or I just add harissa
