What in your opinions, is the best shoes type/style for driving? I am learning atm, and my current footwear is just not cutting it!

A full shoe, something comfortable with a decent (but not too thick) sole and no big heels

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 13/09/2018 09:48

I can only drive in converse Blush
You need something with a thinish sole on them to feel the pedals, flexible with a bit of grip.

Trainers but not all trainers are equal. Some of them you can't feel the pedals under the foot. It's a pain in the arse! I would like to know this as well. Grin

Sketchers Go Walk

My preferred choice is not popular.
Some even say illegal, but it's flip flops!!

If not, flat shoes, with a thin (ish) flexible sole.

LIZS · 13/09/2018 09:53

A good fitting shoe with non slip , flexible sole.

Sirzy · 13/09/2018 09:54

The only shoes I can’t drive in are dr martens and high heels!

Cherrybomball · 13/09/2018 09:57

I may have to keep a look out for some Converse style shoes then! Wore my big brown clucky boots 👢 to my lesson yesterday and they just felt so big and thick, I could barely feel the pedals!

Converse for sure! Good luck

Well I don't think they're illegal but if you're wearing them in an accident it's a pretty harsh punishment than you would get if you weren't wearing them isn't it?

Something like loafers. Slip on, without a thick trainer-type sole.

girlsyearapart · 13/09/2018 10:10

I drive barefoot or in trainers. One of my driving instructors actually said I should do some lessons barefoot to feel the biting point more easily. ( DH said he probably just had a foot fetish)

specialsubject · 13/09/2018 10:12

something that fits, stays on and doesnt have a thick heel. not flip flops, high heels, wellies or walking boots.

in the office days I kept a pair of slip on shoes in the car - driving.damages the back of shoes and even then it was hard to get wearable smart shoes. now it is impossible.

LostMyBaubles · 13/09/2018 10:13

I could only drive in toms or ugg boots when I was learning.

Since then ive wore heels a few times to
drive.
Biggest thing is non slip sole!

Cherrybomball · 13/09/2018 10:18

Girlsyearsapart I did feel temped to go barefoot, yesterday, thought it would be better than my silly big boots,! Does it not hurt you feet tho,?! All the clutch pushing gives my achey foot/leg

I'm still learning, but have a better feel for . the pedals when I wear (cheap and thin soled) flat ballet pumps, so try to always wear those for lessons now. Tried wearing my work shoes (trainers with a thick heel) a few times, and driving defo felt more awkward, like trying to roll a cigarette while wearing gloves instead of bare handed (iyswim).

HoppingPavlova · 13/09/2018 10:22

Flip flops or bare feet here. Can’t drive in shoes, never could but maybe it’s because this was how I was taught?

Flip flops not illegal here and one of my kids wore them (as opposed to bare feet) not long back for their driving test. No one bats an eyelid here but we know how to wear thongs properly so don’t seem to have accidents due to themGrin. The only people who seem to have issues in this regard are the blow-ins who also declare them uncomfortable/hurt between toes/don’t stay on your feet properly and worse still who make slapping noises with them when they walk grrrr Angry.

Cherrybomball · 13/09/2018 10:23

Yes do like the look of toms, but never tired any on,have tried balarina style flat shoes, but as a size 7 I always think my feet look ginormous lol not a fashion show I know....

I can drive in most things. Flipflops are car dependent...never had any bother until I got my fiat 500, and suddenly couldn't do it...had a right hoohah moving the car so dh could park. It's like Butterflies here depending who is home, out first next day to work!!

Have real problems with platforms and other thick soles though.
As pp said, watch the soles too, I had one pair which were deadly if they got wet before I got into the car...i had to dry my feet on the mats before using any pedals! They were not slippy to walk in though, just a problem with those pedal!

Watch for width of shoe too, some smaller cars have slightly offset pedals, or have them closer together, ....again with the 500 dh had to re-adjust and use more toe than foot or he'd catch two pedals.

girlsyearapart · 13/09/2018 10:27

No I’m so used to it now my feet feel fine. I don’t like driving in flip flops and wear them for about half the year so I just take them off whenever I get in the car.
Drove in my trainers for the first time in ages this week and found it really hard!

Cherrybomball · 13/09/2018 10:41

Thanks everyone some really good driving shoe tips will deffo be looking out for thin soles x x x
