Hi i have awful tooth ache its the worst it's ever been and i need advice on what to do to get it under control till 8 when i can ring the emergency dentist number. I have taken ibuprofen, paracetamol amd co-codomol in the correct dosages in the past 24 hours obviously not co-codomol and paracetamol within 4 hours of each other. I asked at the pharmacy and they said i had taken anything that might help and to ring 111 which i did. They advised me to keep on with the pain killers till morning. I have also tried gargling salt water as the nhs website suggests that but nothing is taking the pain off at all not even denting at it and i am crying in pain. Have i missed anything that might help?

Have. You tried taking the paracetamol and ibuprofen together? That usually helps me. And. Hugs-just wanted you to know someone was here x

Cool ice pack to your face (not the tooth obvs)

Whatsthispain · 13/09/2018 05:06

Yes an ice pack on your face will numb it. Brandy on a cotton bud applied to it. How awful. Is it completely out of the blue?

Its been on and off for a while mainly when eating but in the last day its gone unbearable, already have a dentist appointment for 2 weeks so was trying to last till then but not anymore.

I'm sorry, I think you have taken everything. Diclofenac (Voltarol) would have been an option, but only if you hadn't already taken ibuprofen. If the pain is unbearable, maybe you should go to A&E?

Chocnibbles · 13/09/2018 05:17

Littlecabbage- i have thought about a&e however i have heard of them not doing anything to do with dental pain even though the nhs website lists it as an option if you cant cope with the pain and by the time i would get there and be seen i will be able to ring the emergency dentist number as they open at 8

Do you have any cloves? Put them in your mouth whole, next to the tooth. Let them soften then squidge them a bit to release the oils.

StinkySaurus · 13/09/2018 05:23

Anbensol? It might numb the area.

Cantchooseaname · 13/09/2018 05:29

Funny, I found heat helped when I was in similar situation 2 weeks ago- wheat pack against face. If away I might put hot water in a bottle, stick it inside a sock and try that.
Also- not pain relief, but can you distract yourself- set a challenge/ task just to get you through- maybe a walk, or tidy something, watch some Netflix-anything to keep busy.
Hope the dentist can sort you.

roundthehorn · 13/09/2018 05:32

any kind of hard liquer; brandy, whisky, vodka etc. massaged onto the gum with a clean finger will give a few moments relief. I feel for you, nothing quite like the pain of toothache

OddestSock · 13/09/2018 05:35

I hope you manage some rest - being awake with toothache is so miserable :( xx

Zogthebiggestdragon · 13/09/2018 05:46

Ibuprofen gel on the outside of the mouth might help?

Chocnibbles · 13/09/2018 05:48

Dont have cloves unfortunately and as im not at home i cant just go out and get some.
Ice pop on my face is helping a bit so thank to the people who suggested that.
I was trying to watch netflix but couldn't concentrate due to the pain annoyingly.
I do have some vodka here so that might be my next attempt however have had some promethazine which makes you sleepy and can feel that working so fingers crossed i get some sleep.
You are all amazing for your ideas and just being here thank you so much

Like previous posters have said, clove oil and brandy can help.

Do you know what is wrong with the tooth that is causing the pain? If it's broken or has a cavity, sometimes it can help a bit to soak a bit of gauze or cotton in brandy or mouthwash and pack the tooth with it.

If the pain is in the gums because the infection is low down, then oragel type numbing ointment can help.

BeefyCakes · 13/09/2018 05:55

Don't lie down, I know it's an absolute ballache when you're trying to sleep, but try sleeping sitting up.

With regards to ibuprofen, I've been told by a gp that I can double dose it, as long as you don't do it regularly.

Oh and you can get Nurofen plus, which is ibuprofen and codine. Take that with the paracetamol and codine. It'll give you a better dose of codine.

Whatsthispain · 13/09/2018 06:23

Do not apply heat. If its an infection it will spread. Id be tempted to be waiting at the dentists when it opens.

Chocnibbles · 13/09/2018 17:18

Not managed an appointment yet they had none left when i managed to ring because i thought i was registered at one but apparently until i have had my first appointment im not. Then rang emergency dentist line who had none left. Managed to speak to my doctors and they have prescribed stronger painkillers until i can be seen thankfully and my cheek has now swollen up and making it hard to talk.

Sounds like you need antibiotics. Id go to a walk in centre.

MorrisZapp · 13/09/2018 17:53

Painkillers don't touch dental pain. You need to be treated. Are the dentists aware how much pain you're in? Do you live in an area with emergency out of hours provision?

I don't know about anywhere else but in Scotland you ring the health line (111?) and they help you get emergency care.
