Help! How can I defrost chicken fast (and safely?)

Food shopping day is tomorrow.. I live rurally and no chance of getting to a shop that's open Sad I put chicken breasts in the fridge to defrost at about 1pm but still frozen.. my back up plan was to microwave defrost if they weren't thawed but just read on the packet "DO NOT MICROWAVE DEFROST" Google tells me to thaw in 140 degree water precisely but I don't own a thermometer and have no gage of what that temp would feel like.

Yes this is my second post asking for chicken related help this month.. I am useless Blush

I saw through them with a sharp knife, into one cm strips and then fry from frozen. Does that work for your plans for them?

ThePricklySheep · 12/09/2018 19:25

Or just normal hot water from a tap will be about right.

SausageOnAFork · 12/09/2018 19:25

Water cannot get above 100° as I understand it so how do they except that to happen?

Can you put it in a zippy bag and put in hot water?

I use s sharp knife, cut into slices and cook thoroughly in whatever I am using it for, works for stir fries pasta sauce etc...or if cooking in oven, out in foil with oil and cook lower temp for longer till cooked all through and hot.

katmunchkin · 12/09/2018 19:25

I defrost in a sandwich bag submerged in hot water - no idea if it's 140 or not, just as hot as it comes out of the hot tap!

maddiie · 12/09/2018 19:27

@ThePricklySheep Just making a curry in the wok so I imagine that'll work?!

@SausageOnAFork @katmunchkin I have no bags.. but might be ok in packaging? How long does that take normally?

OP posts:
Aridane · 12/09/2018 19:28

140 Fahrenheit presumably

katmunchkin · 12/09/2018 19:29

@SausageOnAFork Yes it'll work in the packaging but might take longer. It does take a while, at least an hour!

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 12/09/2018 19:30

Slice it when frozen and cook it up as usual in the curry (obviously allowing a little extra time to make sure it’s cooked through and absolutely piping hot.

Aridane · 12/09/2018 19:31

Here you go for microwave method

Chicken breasts can also be thawed in the microwave. Place the frozen breasts in a microwave-safe bowl, and heat on the defrost setting for two minutes. Rotate the breast to ensure even thawing, and defrost one minute at a time, turning after each minute, until the breast is fully defrosted. It will take roughly three to four minutes to fully defrost a small, boneless chicken breast.

Ok no time for that.. I'll just whack it in the wok frozen! I had no idea you could do that, always assumed it had to be defrosted Blush

Thanks all!

(Before looking this up, this is the method I used with frozen meat)

maddiie · 12/09/2018 19:32

@Aridane So you can defrost in microwave?! The packaging says not to.. why are there so many rules for chicken!! Grin

Covering themselves! The trick is to break up the defrosting so it doesn’t partially cook

Aridane · 12/09/2018 19:38

Plus you can oven bake from frozen !!
