Bedding set for DS, does it need to be cotton?

My Ds turns 11 in a few weeks, and it seems the time has come to upgrade his room - he's had the same bedding sets that my mum bought him for his "big bed" when he was about 6 Blush. Until now, I've never really seen a need to replace them, they're lovely quality from the White Company, and have washed brilliantly. I totally accept though that he's of an age now that he doesn't want aeroplanes or soldiers on his duvet cover!

Ds would love some football themed bedding, but I can't find anything online which is 100% cotton - does that matter? I've got this preconception in my head that polycotton goes all bobbly after a few washes - and I can't really afford to be replacing stuff in a year's time. I've always stretched my budget to get good quality bedding for myself, and I'd like Ds to have the same (although, being 11, he says he's not bothered!). In saying all this, Ds1 (now 21) had a Clifford the Big Red Dog bed set which lasted years without bobbling, so maybe I'm bothering about nothing?
Thanks in advance, and apologies for the most boring thread on MN today!

Polycotton is fine.

BertieBotts · 12/09/2018 17:56

In fact 100% cotton is an arse as it needs ironing. Polycotton looks alright with a good shake.

JockTamsonsBairns · 13/09/2018 00:06

Thanks Bertie. I've never ironed bedding in my life, and I'm not about to start. Ironing is not my thing at all.

He’ll probably want something else in a few years when he considers himself too grown up for a football theme, I wouldn’t worry about it needing to long lasting! The cheaper the better in my opinion. And polycotton is absolutely fine and I agree it’s less wrinkled out of the wash.

MiddleClassProblem · 13/09/2018 00:21

My Boyzone duvet cover lasted years, Mum chucked it out still in good nick 😭

Thanks Consider. I guess you have a point.
I just want my Ds to sleep in White Company bedding forever!!!!!! Grin

Can highly recommend Matalan bedding, they do some kids sets which are 100% cotton as well as the usual poly cotton which is decent too

claraschu · 13/09/2018 06:35

I hate polycotton and couldn't care less about wrinkles or ironing. I think cotton feels so much nicer, and anything else is a bit sweaty and uncomfortable.

BrickByBrick · 13/09/2018 06:53

I only have polycotton and it is always fine.

stargirl1701 · 13/09/2018 07:11

Anything plastic will release micro particles into the water system every time you wash it.

jigsawpiece · 13/09/2018 07:17

Whatever you do don't get 100% microfibre which is a euphemism for polyester. Poly cotton 52%/48% is fine. Asda do a good selection.

ButlinsCanbuggeroff · 13/09/2018 07:24

I have never ironed cotton in my life.

Mine have character bedding which is exactly what they wanted but does make them sweaty and gross. Don't buy for a child with skin problems or eczema but otherwise up to them really.

Whatsthisbear · 13/09/2018 17:05

Mine DC gets soaking wet with sweat if it's not 100% cotton. I really struggled to find older bedding but managed to track down some 100% cotton older child's bed sets in Ikea. I don't iron them

Almondio · 13/09/2018 18:39

I tend to buy pure cotton bedding as I love the crispness of it and we all tend to be 'hot sleepers', but yes, it's an arse to iron.

I get reasonably priced sets from TKMaxx/Homesense or Matalan.
