Walking home from school age?

Hello mumsnet

At what age did your children start to walk themselves to and from school from?
I know each child is different and matures at different ages but I was generally after a bit of a poll

  1. But we live in a small village.

Strangely enough. I let her walk home tonight alone for first time, she's 10.
One busy road with no crossings/patrol and one quieter road to cross.

DDs school set a minimum of y5, so 9 at the youngest. DD has been walking two thirds since 10, the last third has a couple of nasty roads to cross but I expect her to be doing it all by the end of y6.

Check with the school first and then assess your child.

moredoll · 12/09/2018 17:16

I read that children can't judge speed and distance before 8.

WhiteVixen · 12/09/2018 17:25

Our school, well the juniors: daughter currently attends the Infants next door, don’t let them arrive or leave unsupervised by an adult until they’re in year 7.

WhiteVixen · 12/09/2018 17:25

Ugh, I meant year 6.

WeaselsRising · 12/09/2018 18:01

Our primary was Y6, or late Y5 if the child in question was known to be sensible.

ApollO88 · 12/09/2018 18:18

Our sons school have sent out the usual annual news letters and policies. I always remember the policy being only year 6 pupils were allowed to go home unsupervised. This years policy says ks2 can go unsupervised. DS has started year 3 this year so is ks2 and he is 7. I'd say a quite young 7 too and there's no way I'd let him walk home yet. I'm wondering if it's an error on the policy

Policy in our area is Primary 4 so 7 and 8 year olds.

Potentialpoochowner · 12/09/2018 22:39

We live in a large village. School expects you to pick up until year 5, from which time you can give written permission for them to walk home unsupervised. I’m taking that as a benchmark for walking in too.

MrsBlondie · 12/09/2018 22:40

Year 6 and age 10/11

3boysandabump · 12/09/2018 22:45

My older 2 do they are 7&8 but we live next door to the school

DropZoneOne · 12/09/2018 22:48
  1. DD started walking home after Easter in Y5 on the days I was at home to meet her.

Now Y6, she walks home from after school club or school and let's herself in, one of us is home within 30 minutes.

She doesn't want to walk to school yet.

School policy was always y6 but that seems to have been quietly dropped.

ExFury · 12/09/2018 22:50

I'm wondering if it's an error on the policy

More likely they’ve realised they don’t actually have the right to make such a policy, it’s up to parents. If they feel a child is neglected or endangered they can speak to the parents (and then SS if they feel it merits is) but it’s not actually their call.

WindDoesNotBreakTheBendyTree · 12/09/2018 22:50

DS1 and DD both started getting the bus home a couple of days per week in the summer term of Y5

Longdistance · 12/09/2018 22:53

At my dds school they can walk home grime yr 3. But that’s assuming there’s an adult at home.

Me and dh both work ft, so it’s a no go.
