Baby no longer making cooing noises - worried

Has anyone else ever experienced this?

My baby is now 15 weeks. At around 10 weeks she was cooing loads and making sounds like ah-goo, ah-woo etc. She's stopped making those noises entirely over the last few weeks.

She has in that time started blowing bubbles and squeaking and also learnt how to laugh, and also roll and discovered her hands.

I'm just concerned that she doesn't seem to know how to make those earlier noises anymore. She laughs and smiles a lot when I talk to her and still vocalises in the form of shouting a lot.

I saw the HV today and she made me feel really panicked as she didn't seem to understand my question or think it was common. She said as long as there is interaction it's ok but to worry about regression - but wouldn't this count as regression? Sad

Health Visitors seem to make things up as they go along.

Your baby has gone through the cooing stage and gone onto the next stage! That's all.

No advice but following as similar here with my 16 week old so hoping it's normal

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 12/09/2018 11:02

I wouldn't worry about it, she's changed and found different noises to make and different things to do. It happens! I wouldn't regard it as a regression. It's not like they're still expected to make cooing noises as well as talking - as they learn a new skill, the tiny baby stuff gets left behind.

Totally normal. My eight month old stopped making sounds for a few weeks, then started again recently. I assumed she had just found something more interesting to do.

Babies change all the time, all at different rates, with not one advance when you expect it. As long as they're alert, contented and growing, they're fine

ArialAnna · 12/09/2018 11:25

Totally normal. They discover they can making cooing noises, do that for a couple of weeks, then get bored of that and move onto something else.

crazydoglady6867 · 12/09/2018 11:27

The cooing noises are your baby learning what all her bits are for, she has learned her mouth makes s noise now she has discovered it can blow bubbles too, next few weeks she will learn it can mske a very loud screeching noise, she is fine and it is perfectly normal.

MauraIsles · 12/09/2018 11:27

The noises babies make change over time, she's growing up and finding her voice - please don't worry!

Whatamuddleduck · 12/09/2018 11:28

My baby is now 19w and did similar. The coo is back accompanied by new noises including a grumble and a throat rattle.

SilverbytheSea · 12/09/2018 11:28

Try not to worry, I remember by son went through a stage around 7-8 months of saying “hiya” and waving all the time, then that stopped and he doesn’t really say that anymore and I remember being concerned for a bit, but a few months down the line he can now say dog, cat, dad, chips, spot and scamp (well, more “Samp” - his grans dogs) and few other words, still doesn’t say “mummy” yet 😑😂 they just like to throw us a curveball!

user1493413286 · 12/09/2018 11:33

My DD would often stop doing one thing while concentrating on another; particular something physical like rolling so I wouldn’t worry

bootsandsocks · 12/09/2018 11:36

so normal my dd is 16mo now but back in her early weeks she made lovely little cooing noises then at about 2mo she stopped and didn’t make much noise other than crying, it came back but different. just keep talking, reading and singing to her and she will interact vocally again :) my daughter now says mumma, dada, nana, narna (banana), rara (lion), bubble, ball, park, peppa, buk (book), juce (juice) and she makes animal noises when asked like cow, dog, horse, sheep, pig and duck. she sings seesaw too in her own way! all babies develop at different times and through learning new skills previous ones take a back seat :) don’t worry at all she will be fine!

Thanks so much for the reassurance everyone! I feel much better now. Not sure why the HV acted so bemused this morning...
