Learning the piano at 50

Any advice?

I was thinking of buying a keyboard - any recommendations for a learner? We don't have room for an upright at the moment.

Casio and Yamaha used to make stage pianos, i.e. portable with a collapsible stand. One of those with graded hammer keys would be more suitable than a generic keyboard, if you have space.

Bump.

Do try and get a digital piano with weighted keys, touch sensitive. Also try and get one with a pedal attachment and if possible full size key board.

Any of these would be ok (I've only looked at page 1), try and go for at least one of the midrange ones, the cheapest is a too small and you would grow out of quite quickly.

OOh that's really helpful - thank you.

I have a lesson tomorrow morning. If I remember I'll ask my teacher if she can recommend one.

PeridotCricket · 12/09/2018 16:29

Oh yes please.

Daft question I know but do you have to be able to read music before you have a lesson....

OP posts:
IndigoSpritz · 12/09/2018 17:08

I don't think so. I had a fair idea anyway from my violin experiences back in the day but if you're completely new you can reasonably expect the music theory as well as the practical side.

I started learning a couple of years ago. I have a kawai digital piano as does my teacher as she lives in a flat. So something like this would be ideal.

Although I could read music, you don't have to. There are other mature students that my teacher teaches and they had no previous musical experience.

StillMedusa · 12/09/2018 17:18

No you don't need to be able to read music.. it comes with the learning!
I'm 50 and started learning classical guitar 9 weeks ago. I am amazed at how quickly the black dots on lines have become something I can read (slowly!) as I never thought that could happen. It's frustrating and satisfying all at once!
We used to have a digital Yamaha Clavinova in our house (mum played) it sounded and felt just like the real thing... not cheap but they do come up on ebay!

IndigoSpritz · 13/09/2018 11:24

Peridot. My teacher couldn't be specific model-wise but said anything from Roland or Yamaha would be fine. It all depends on how much you can afford and whether you want brand-new or used. I think you'll find that Roland are more expensive.

IndigoSpritz · 13/09/2018 11:30

The Roland FP30 might be worth a look.

PeridotCricket · 13/09/2018 12:07

This is great thankyou!

Sorry to jump on your thread OP but can anyone tell me how robust these digital pianos are. I want to buy one to learn on and encourage my 6yo to play but I also have a hooligan spirited 3yo who will be tempted to open the keyboard. Are they very delicate?

IndigoSpritz · 13/09/2018 12:19

Universal. My piano is a Yamaha YDP161 - mdf construction with a proper lid and quality keyboard. I think it would stand up to any toddler. However, the portable stage pianos don't have a lot for protection so may be best avoided, unless you can hide it between sessions !

UniversalTruth · 13/09/2018 12:23

Thanks IndigoSpritz. I was looking at that series so that's helpful.
