I was bitten by a dog! Rant.

Just walking along minding my business when 2 adults and a 4(ish) year old walked towards me.

The adults had (unwisely) given control of a very excitable Yorkshire Terrier to the child.

The dog jumped up on me and bit my thigh!!! I exclaimed and the family and dog pretty much ran away without a word. Bastards.

I couldn’t check for some hours but it felt sore. I didn’t think the skin had been broken as there was no blood soaking through my jeans and no hole in them either.

However when I got home I do actually have 2 small puncture wounds, and they bloody hurt I’m a wuss

Just a rant. I don’t need to seek medical advice do I? I don’t think the beast was rabid.

You will need a tetanus if you haven’t had one in a good few years. If you see them again I would tell them as they need to know their dog is a biter even if you aren’t going to report it.

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 07:49

Ugh really? That’s a pain.

It worries me that where it bit me is toddler face height. Surprisingly high for such a small dog.

That's quite mean of the family to just run off, it must have been a shock if you were just going about your daily business

JazzAndCat · 12/09/2018 07:54

I would be livid! Also the dog is probably a danger to the child. Any chance you will bump into them again?

Claw001 · 12/09/2018 07:55

Did they know the dog bit you?

billybagpuss · 12/09/2018 07:56

Phone the gp and check but I don't think they do regular tetanus boosters any more as they have new evidence its not necessary.

I'm sure you'll be fine, but I try to be a responsible dog owner and stories like this really upset me.

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 07:57

I am pretty peeved about it. The knew it bit me because I loudly said “ow, it bit me!” But they could not get out of there fast enough.

I love dogs and wasn’t concerned at all with it approaching me, I certainly wasn’t expecting it to dig it’s teeth into my thigh!

My main concern is for other members of the public, especially kids and yes also the kid that was with them. But I wasn’t in my usual area, so I doubt I will see them again. Not sure that there is much I can do?

Similar happened to me, I didn't check it at the time but I had a really nasty bite.

Police took it quite seriously, was advised to see a doctor.

NerrSnerr · 12/09/2018 07:58

This happened to me and I got given a course of antibiotics as I was told it was likely it would get infected. It was only a nip but it scarred.

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 08:01

I’ll give the GP a call and see what they say. What a pain.

Report it to the dog warden locally - they often know about problematical dogs.

Big hug to you. Why can't dog owners keep them under control. By all means have a pet, but keep it away from other people.

CommunistLegoBloc · 12/09/2018 08:44

I’d report it to the dog warden and possibly the police. The dog was out of control (on a lead, but walked by a toddler = legally out of control). Obviously it’s pretty horrible for you to be bitten, but as you say, it could get a lot worse. What if it bites an unrelated child in an incident like yours?

Bronxer · 12/09/2018 08:47

My friends dog bit me the other day and didn’t even bat an eyelid! I think some people see it as normal play behaviour for small dogs. I find smaller ones are the most aggressive, maybe it’s to make up for their size?🤔😂 Wasn’t as bad as yours but I’d definitely get a tetanus if I were you like a PP has said!

Bronxer · 12/09/2018 08:47

Oh and report them if you can remember what they look like!

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 08:48

It does worry me, I’m not sure I can be of much help to the police as I have no idea who these people are. I will send an email to 101 later so at least it’s on record and if the police are interested they can always contact me.

After I took my DD to minor injuries, when her horse (accidentally) scraped her hand with his teeth, the nurse told me that animal bites that have broken the skin is one thing they unquestioningly give antibiotics for (ie they don’t wait to see if it is infected first because the consequences can be very nasty)

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 08:56

I just called 111 to ask for advice as I couldn’t get through to dr surgery (no surprise!) and they said A&E within 4 hours. Which seems a wee bit dramatic for a single puncture wound, it was a yorkie, not the beast of Bodmin Grin

I think I will pop the the pharmacy instead and if they also insist I will go, but god how embarrassing Blush

I was bitten by a dog when it attacked mine a few years ago. Go to a & e or minor injuries unit for tetanus jab immediately.
Report to 101 too.

AamdC · 12/09/2018 09:21

This happened to.my 11 yr old last year only it was a staffie type dog the women with also ran off, i too him to our GP,s straight away. He said as my son had at least five tetnuses in his life he would be covered untill he was an adult , also as i had cleaned it and put antisepric cream on there was no treatment , I did contact the police and they were helpful but they said unless i jhad a name and details for the owner there wasent a lot they could do.

WeakAsIAm · 12/09/2018 09:29

Please get it looked at, dogs have lots of nasty germs that can cause huge problems when they get past the protective skin (barrier).
This is def not a waste of NHS time, treated a patient yesterday for quite a serious infection from a dog bite.

GloGirl · 12/09/2018 09:31

Pharmacist will insist you go, honestly save your time. A&E wont mind, dog bites are filthy and you'll be quickly in and out once assessed.

Mrsemcgregor · 12/09/2018 09:32

Managed to get through to doc on the phone, she sent a prescription straight through the the pharmacy for antibiotics. All up to date with tetanus thankfully!

I will report to 101 now, more for concern of the child they had with them. You never know they might be able to find out who they are .

OP posts:
PositivelyPERF · 12/09/2018 09:36

Please go straight to A&E and get it treated. I run a dog sitting business, and if the dog has dirty teeth you can end up with a serious infection. I’ve had a few infected bites. Keep in mind, that the bite could be deeper than it looks, so that bacteria is quite deep into your skin. Fucking irresponsible dog owners give me the rage. They make it tough for the rest of us!

GloGirl · 12/09/2018 09:42

Nice you've got a sensible doctor, ask pharmacist for a suitable cream as well, belt and braces why not.
