Over crowded Britain...really

I know it’s the daily mail but these stunning pictures show just how huge swathes parts of our fabulous country are practically uninhabited which as I’ve driven round a lot of it or gone by train I quite suspected.

Yet we are fed the lies, overcrowded Britain etc
Yes, I agree there are overcrowded cities..but uvercrowded Britain..I don’t think so

We are much more populated per square km than any other European country except Belgium and Netherlands, according to Wikipedia

Growingboys · 11/09/2018 15:25

YABU.

If we concrete over the whole lot we'll have nothing to eat, for a start. And have you tried getting a hospital appointment for your DC recently?

You come across as very ill-informed, OP.

NarcolepticOuchMouse · 11/09/2018 15:37

I think this is more in reference to over stretching public services. Which is not the fault of the immigrants bit rather the government that manages said services 🐸☕

TeacupDrama · 11/09/2018 16:11

we are in rural scotland about 1 hour from glasgow, there is plenty of space and jobs, unemployment is lower than average in uor area but there isn't enough jobs for another 2000 people there are enough schools places in the area for another 2-300 children there is land and houses, however it has taken 2 years to get a new GP in the village even though there is a very nice town 15 minutes away and trains direct to glasgow from there every 30 minutes
the broadband is a bit rubbish now up to 12mbps was about 2 last year but there is space,

lots of scotland is not arable land it is suitable for hill sheep and maybe highland cows, many parts of scotland are beyond the wheat line which is why they traditionally grew oats most of Wales is also unsuitable for wheat

what is needed is some new large villages/ small towns on existing transport networks big enough for some shops a primary school at least with 1 class per year (200 children) a medical centre etc things that get forgotten rubbish dumps, graveyards etc Here there is enough burial space for 1587 years (it was recently in papers compared to some cities which have less than 20 years) people don't like thinking about death but if you need places in schools you will also need places in graveyards

RedneckStumpy · 11/09/2018 16:19

Yes, it's overpopulated. The sustainable population of the U.K. would be between 17-27 million

Personally I think the 17 million is a little high, the country is way overpopulated.

TeacupDrama · 11/09/2018 16:20

and where are you suggesting the extra 30 million go?

SmallYappyTypeDog · 11/09/2018 16:38

Very short sighted thinking.

Space to build a home is just one minor factor, one of the most significant is water. Is there enough to provide for the population and for adequate sanitation? Even relatively small scale building can impact on the water cycle, more concrete means water entering rivers rapidly and causing flooding. It also means less water percolating into the ground and refilling aquifers that we depend on for our water supply in many areas. We would have both floods and drought. Flood defences often just shift the problem further downstream.

It is also incredibly risky to be dependent on other countries for our food.

Quite simply the idea that we have to have an ever increasing population to pay pensions etc is madness as it is not sustainable. We are kicking the can down the road and at some point very painful economic decisions will need to be made. The longer the situation is allowed to build the worse the crisis will be.

Abra1de · 11/09/2018 16:38

It’s a demographic Ponzi scheme.

Seniorschoolmum · 11/09/2018 16:51

Firstly, we need to grow enough food, and provide enough water. Secondly we need to make a population economically viable which means the far reaches are no good without industry. Or people are unemployed and miserable.
It is fair to say inside the M25 is full and struggling with infrastructure.
So the ability to plan elsewhere, and make sensible provision is perfectly reasonable.

DGRossetti · 11/09/2018 17:10

Firstly, we need to grow enough food

I wonder when we last were self sufficient in food given we were importing 40% in 1871 ....

www.populationmatters.org/documents/britain_feeds.pdf

that's with a smaller population than today ...

AlecTrevelyan006 · 11/09/2018 17:48

I agree with the OP

Gaspodethetalkingdog · 11/09/2018 17:59

Well they are building over the SE of England where I live - and not cheap houses either. No wonder our wildlife is suffering. We need to stop all Immigration now. Racist - no one cares

Womaningreen · 11/09/2018 18:23

How anyone can look at those pictures and decide that Britain should destroy that to create more housing is beyond me. There is a massive worldwide overpopulation problem OP - wake up!

specialsubject · 11/09/2018 18:27

worth noting how old that article is. There are nearly 70 million people in the UK now. That's why you can't get a GP appointment and why the south-east is in permanent gridlock.

FuckKnuckle · 11/09/2018 19:17

@theunsure - couldn't agree more.

IcedPurple · 11/09/2018 19:28

The UK is not particularly overcrowded.

Much of England, however, is. The south-east is one of the most densely populated parts of Europe, nearly on a par with the Netherlands and the Ruhr in Germany. Saying that there are open spaces here and there means nothing.
