Busybody Complained About DH's Car

WWYD if you arrived home to find an anonymous, hand-delivered letter on the doormat complaining about your car?

Asking on behalf of DH, who had this happen today. He has an old (technically classic) "hobby car" that he is very attached to. He keeps it well maintained and it's in remarkable condition for its age. He only drives it the short distance to work and back to keep it running - we use my car for everything else.

But this letter complains about the "noxious fumes" from his car (emissions are safely within legal limits), implies that it can't possibly have an MOT (it does), and that he can afford to change it for something more modern and less polluting...because the writer knows where he works and therefore he must be earning decent money!!!

Clearly they also know where he lives because they delivered the letter.

We're both feeling pretty creeped out by the stalkerish behaviour, not to mention annoyed by the sheer cheek and ignorant assumptions about both our income and the road worthiness of the car.

I know there's not much we can do. We'll just ignore it I suppose...

Keep the letter somewhere safe just in case this weirdo contacts you again or anything. But otherwise definitely just ignore.

GlitteryFluff · 11/09/2018 08:30

How odd.
I agree - keep and ignore.

Kool4katz · 11/09/2018 09:36

Surely it's better to repair and re-use rather than scrapping and buying new every few years. The writer is an idiot. Just ignore the saddo.

HearMeSnore · 11/09/2018 09:48

I'm glad it's not just me who found it totally bizarre.

The writer even pontificated about how the government is pushing for cleaner vehicles and it's irresponsible to drive a "car like that" when cleaner cars are easily affordable.

DH pootled off to work in his comedy car this morning just the same. I watched to check that it hasn't started belching black smoke or something without us noticing...but no. It's fine.

And yes Kool4katz I agree it's better to keep old cars running (as long as they can run safely and legally) than to keep buying new. Running an old car 3 miles down the road twice a day doesn't pollute as much as making a new car, surely?

Can you attach a notice at the front of your property with laminated copies of the emissions details for the car, a redacted copy of the MOT certificate and a sign saying 'FOR THE CREEPY STALKER WHO KNOWS WHERE I WORK AND SENT US AN ANONYMOUS LETTER ABOUT MY CAR'?

They'll shut up quick smart then Grin

Pinkywoo · 11/09/2018 10:09

I would definitely do this! ⬆️

HearMeSnore · 11/09/2018 11:28

That's a fine idea. I will put it to DH.

We wondered if it's someone who works for the same company, in which case copies displayed in the windscreen of his car while it's parked in the staff car park might send the same message.

Meanwhile he's just put a small sticker in his rear windscreen that simply says "Bite Me". You'd have to be snooping around the car quite closely (or seriously tailgating) to be able to read it.

I'd worry about a notice escalating the situation, to be honest. They might feel it legitimises their "concerns".
