Can anyone help with how you would get sprinkles to stay on the side of a buttercreamed cake? I'm too scared to pick up and roll but is that the only way? Kinda like this pic. But with normal hundreds and thousands rather than what looks like multicoloured minestrone Grin

Thanks! Although I'm now thinking it's a bit too time consuming for a child's party where the cake will be inhaled rather than eaten.

And minestrone on cakes must be American as she had it too!

They should stick pretty easily if you buttercream the whole of the sides.

@hidinginthenightgarden I did think the woman in the YouTube link was a bit miserly with her buttercream so I'll give it a go with a "more is more" attitude. Thanks

I did it for my DC's 1st birthday.
Never. Again.
It made such a mess, took ages, and (as you say) was wolfed down by children and adults in such a short time it really wasn't worth it!
Not that I'm trying to put you off or anything Grin

I’ve made a few cakes like this before- it’s not as tricky as it looks.
You need a large baking tray to catch extra sprinkles. If you place something under the baking tray at one side (a book for example) it lifts and tilts it and makes it easier to get the sprinkles to stick on! Just cup your hand, fill with sprinkles and pat them on the cake.

I’ve attached a picture which probably makes more sense than my explanation. Hope that helps!!

OK, well I'm not sure my bakes are in your league, @Cofogirl!

@OhHelp0hNo I think I'm with you - no one will appreciate the hours time it will take me so I'll do a different plan.

I can never keep the base clean which I think will be my downfall. I'll stick to sprinkles on top.

Marks and Sparks sell a confetti cake - it's very delicious, and considerably less hard work!

Easiest way is the messiest way unfortunately! Just grab handfuls and throw them at the cake they will stick and have something under it to catch loose ones.
