Horse riding madness

Well I live in quite a long busy street on the outskirts of a busy town, it's so busy it was made into a one way street. DD and I looked outside and saw a young woman on the biggest horse I've seen in a while. A few people were talking to her while the horse was standing and DD went out to look as well. The street is quite narrow and cars were struggling to get past and the horse started to get nervous so the rider turned the horse to walk out of the street against the flow of traffic, the horse really didn't like this, so she took him on the path! Now this is a street of terraced houses, the horse must have been terrified and I think it was really dangerous. I don't know if I should phone the local stables but that was really silly

What makes you think she came from the local stables? If it's a school she probably wouldn't be out alone, if it's a livery yard she's probably the horse owner and nobody can tell her what stupid things she can and can't do.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 19:00

Of course I don't know where she came from, I'm only guessing

So then what you seem to be saying is that no one can tell a horse rider off for such dangerous riding

Were there people on the path where she was walking the horse?

Badbadtromance · 10/09/2018 19:11

I'm with you op.it sounds like madness

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 19:16

I couldn't see if there were people, there is a row of cars in the way , the path is only around 5 foot wide, and there are no front gardens just the houses

Whilst I can't imagine why anyone with a horse that is nervous in traffic would choose to ride on such a road, I can see why she took the horse off the road in order to calm it down. From what you have written it sounds as if the cars were getting very close to the horse and it was starting to feel hemmed in. Horses are flight animals and if it was getting nervous with the traffic on a narrow road then it could potentially become dangerous if she were to lose control of it. Dangerous to cars, passengers and pedestrians.

I wouldn't get myself into such a situation in the first case personally.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 19:56

britnay she was riding the wrong way down a one way street

I thought I saw someone riding a horse across our street but when I got there it was just a zebra crossing.

britnay · 10/09/2018 20:12

Sorry, I missed the bit in your post that it was a one way street. Yes, obviously she should be going in the same direction as the traffic. Perhaps she had never been down there before and when the horse was panicking forgot which way she was meant to be going?

StaffiesAndPonies · 10/09/2018 20:12

She might have been lost and asking the passers-by for directions. This has happened to me before and you kind of go into survival mode where you just need to keep calm and get the horse home.

Sometimes with horses, as with everything else, a non-ideal situation happens and you just have to deal with it as best you can. It would be brilliant if everyone could predict each moment of their day and avoid imperfection but life often involves responding to things that we didn’t expect to happen.

FrangipaniBlue · 10/09/2018 20:13

I was going to say too it sounds like she maybe got lost, was asking the people for directions and decided going back the way she came was safer than continuing on, possibly into busier traffic?

UrsulaPandress · 10/09/2018 20:14

The cars should have waited not tried to squeeze past.

Pebblespony · 10/09/2018 20:14

No one would bat an eyelid about that around here. Everyday occourance.

LadyLance · 10/09/2018 20:19

Horse riders should follow the highway code, so I guess you could report her to the police, but I doubt they would be interested.

Cars shouldn't try and squeeze past though- they should leave a reasonable gap and they should be patient.

I agree, she may have been lost and trying to make the best of a bad situation.

As you don't know which stables she is from, I think ringing them wouldn't be helpful.

QuestionableMouse · 10/09/2018 20:26

Op do you have any experience with horses?

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 20:31

What has my experience with horses got to do with anything

MyBloodyMaltesersAreMelting · 10/09/2018 20:48

Hopefully not a mistake she will make again
That could have turned out really nasty

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/09/2018 21:06

Saggital Grin

QuestionableMouse · 10/09/2018 22:38

Because you sound like you don't have a clue sorry. Yes the horse may have been scared by the traffic but nothing you write suggesta that the horse was terrified or out of control. It's not idea to rise on the pavement but there are times it's the best of bad situation.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 23:07

Maybe it wasn't the brightest thing to bring a horse down a very busy narrow one way Street and then turn around and go up it the wrong was, I'm sure I wouldn't need to be Nick Skelton to know that's stupid and she put people in danger

OP posts:
QuestionableMouse · 10/09/2018 23:12

You don't know her reasons though. Sounds like it was a mistake or she got lost and was trying to get out of the situation in the quickest way possible.

sonlypuppyfat · 10/09/2018 23:15

It was lucky no-one walked out of their front door as that came down the path!
