Would I need a doctor or a dentist? Or an exorcist?

I’m teething! Grin None of my wisdom teeth are fully out, as they’re all growing in diagonally or sideways and into my existing teeth. Not usually a problem, but once every 6 months or so, one wisdom tooth has a little growth spurt and pushes down/out a little bit more. It’s sore, and I can’t fully open my mouth when it happens, but it usually passes in a few days. This time it’s gone on longer than usual, but the pain feels nothing like toothache, just like a very sore/bruised gum. I’ve been using mouthwashes and salt water rinses every day, brushing it very gently as obviously it bleeds where the tooth is coming out. It’ll probably pass in a few more days but if it doesn’t pass do I go to the dentist, the gp or just hack it out with a pair of rusty pliers?
Also I have lots of sympathy for teething babies now!

I like your title Smile

but seriously - dentist asap .You may have an infection/abscess under the gum and the sooner sorted the better .

i think teeth trying to come through do go up and down and that creates pockets that are prone to infection .or something .

phone now

I got thoroughly told off by my dentist a few years ago for suffering through wisdom teething that left me unable to eat solids for a couple of days. I believe the phrase used was “Well, we now know you’ve got a robust immune system but next time don’t be ridiculous as you’re risking an abscess if it’s tha bad!”.

Have you tried clove oil? It’s utterly vial and I think can’t be used on broken skin but it does numb the pain. Adult Bongela too as that still has the good stuff that under 16s can’t have!

No to the rusty pliers!

Yes to the dentist. Exorcists don't work Mondays.

Stupomax · 10/09/2018 14:07

I only had one wisdom tooth that did this, but it destroyed the molar in front, so I ended up losing that too.

You should see your dentist ASAP to find out if your wisdom teeth can be removed before more teeth are damaged.

CoughArghCoughArghCough · 10/09/2018 16:23

Damn those lazy exorcists not working on Mondays! Actually, can you damn an exorcist or does it just bounce off them?
Thank you for all the advice. It certainly doesn’t feel like an abscess yet - the last time i had one I was howling with pain - but I know these things can change quickly so I’ll call the dentist to get it checked.
Adult Bonjela helps a lot. But actually, if I’m not using my mouth, it doesn’t hurt at all. And when I try to open my mouth there’s no shooting pain, it just doesn’t open all the way, so I can eat, but not yawn. Doesn’t hurt to touch, it just feels a bit sore and bruised if I poke it from the outside. What are the signs that it’s turning into an abscess? Ectoplasm? Static on the tv? Pus? Howling?

Dentist definitely.
Although no harm in trying the exorcism (watch out for green vomit and unusual behaviour with a giant crucifix though)

Signs of abcess - PAAAIIIIN (I had abcess on my wisdom tooth and felt as if my head was going to explode with pain, swelling as well. And it will hurt all the time.

If all else fails try one of those huge bandages that go right round your head and under your chin - they always work for people in old black and white films Grin

I had a similar problem with my wisdom tooth. I couldn't open my mouth as well due to the pain.
My dentist referred to the hospital to see a specialist to have my wisdom tooth extracted.
I was also prescribed a course of antibiotics so I advise you to see your dentist as soon as possible :).

Love the titleGrin

Cussess will bounce off an exorcist so save yourself the effort lass.

Use energies to get thee to the dentist and I hope is fixed soonest.

CoughArghCoughArghCough · 10/09/2018 23:04

Right, exorcism cancelled, and I have a dentist appointment booked for this week. Which is good, as my face is now comedically lopsided thanks to a swollen cheek Grin

I imagine when I open my mouth for the dentist it will look like the fridge scene from Ghostbusters, with my swollen gum growling "There is no Dana only Zoooooool"

Dentist ASAP!
But in the meantime hot salty mouthwash squiddged around the area will help.
