I've lost my appetite...

So I lost my appetite over the summer in the heat and really struggled to eat very much of anything.

I still haven't got it back and I'm struggling to eat anything!

If I have a couple of scrambled eggs for breakfast, I feel full well into the early evening and then can only manage a small piece of fruit or something.

The only thing I feel like eating (crave in fact) is uncooked dried pasta so we don't have any of that in the house at the moment because I don't buy it.

I've had nothing to eat so far today in the hope that I feel hungry enough for a small meal later.

Has anyone else experienced this? And how long did it take to get back to normal?

It's usual for me ton lose my appetite when it's hot but not to this extent.

Are you losing a lot of weight / underweight ?

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 10/09/2018 13:15

No. I've lost about half a stone but that's not much since June time and it's pretty stable now. I'm not underweight.

You aren’t pregnant, are you?!
That happened to me when I was pregnant.

Pringlemunchers · 10/09/2018 13:33

I think you should make an appointment with the gp, just for a chat. Are you depressed at the moment and are you getting any exercise?

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 10/09/2018 13:38

No! Definitely not pregnant!!

I'm not depressed but I'm not really getting any exercise. It really did start with the hot weather. It usually comes back when the weather cools but it hasn't think year. I think it was because the heat just went on for so much longer.

single If I was losing weight I could probably see some benefit to it! Grin

Perhaps you should see your GP, just to exclude anything concerning.

Doyoumind · 10/09/2018 13:39

It's not normal to have such a low appetite. I would be speaking to my GP if I were you.

DaanSaaf · 10/09/2018 13:42

The craving dried pasta could be iron deficiency

Pringlemunchers · 10/09/2018 13:42

Try going for a brisk walk , it could help pick up your appetite ? It's a good thing you're not losing masses., But it is not really usual to have such a low appetite.

Dljlr · 10/09/2018 13:46

Maybe this is just your new eating routine. I don't eat all day, I'm not hungry at all, and generally just eat once at about 8 / 9 in the evening. I'm slim but not underweight.

Phosphorus · 10/09/2018 13:48

Are you eating even though you have no appetite?

Because if you are consistently eating a couple of eggs and a bit of fruit a day, you should lose weight whether you want to or not.

CrabbityRabbit · 10/09/2018 13:56

How many calories are you getting in a day?

Two scrambled eggs on their own is only 150 cals. Then a piece of fruit at maybe 70 cals?

It is impossible that you are not losing weight on that amount unless you are either adding loads of cream, cheese etc. to the eggs or are ill somehow. Are you grazing on sweets during the day? Are you eating in the middle of the night and not remembering?

Are you very lethargic?

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 10/09/2018 14:34

How many calories are you getting in a day?

Probably around 600-700 calories - I am trying to eat. The worst days are the scrambled eggs/fruit days. But when I do eat something I'm trying to make it as balanced as possible and as calorific as possible. E.g. eating bananas and avocado.

I'm not ill but I am a bit lethargic I suppose.

I have been going for walks.

I suppose as much as anything I don't feel hungry enough. I feel full very quickly and when I try to think of what I want to eat I feel 'full' at the thought of it.

For example: I went out for dinner the other evening and ordered moussaka. I had to scrape the bechemal sauce off after one small mouthful; ate about half of it but did eat the small roasted veg side it came with and felt uncomfortably full. I felt 'full' until the following evening when I had one slice of grilled cheese on toast. It's more like that really.

I didn't know dried pasta craving could be a sign of low iron. I'll consider that, thanks.

I'll give it to the end of this week and gontonthe Drs if it hasn't improved. Thanks.

How old are you op? I don't want to scaremonger but this was the only symptom my mum had before she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It is an early warning sign feeling full without eating she/I didn't know this so she never saw the GP until it was to late. Please read up on the symptoms and get yourself to the GP, pancreatic cancer can be treated successfully if caught at the very early stage and you are displaying those symptoms with what you describe. Although I hope I am way off on this one.

BackToBeingMe · 10/09/2018 14:44

Low iron is also a symptom

FlowerpotFairyHouse · 10/09/2018 14:51

Ok thanks. I'm mid 40s.

I'm not going to worry unduly but maybe a trip to the drs is in order.

Please do, your symptoms need checking out, particularly the feeling full.

ragged · 11/09/2018 12:17

I'm sure you're eating more than 700 kcal/day. You'd lose a lot of weight if that was a true average.

I lost appetite the year I turned 39. Years later I got lots of appetite back after I started doing a huge amount more aerobic exercise.
