How old is your kitchen?

Pure curiosity.
I was told by a kitchen fitter that the average life span of a kitchen is 7 years. Shock.Truthfully i struggle to believe that is true given the cost and hassle replacing a kitchen is. I would have thought 15-20 would be closer to the mark.

So how old is your kitchen?
How old was the previous one (if you replaced an existing kitchen)?

So a person who makes a living out fitting kitchens has advised you to buy a new one every 7 years, presumably employing the talents of a kitchen fitter?

Sounds a load of tosh to me, if it was properly done I don't see why it shouldn't last a lifetime, like any other furniture. Of course I'd expect to replace the appliances every now and them.

treaclesoda · 10/09/2018 13:13

Hmm, mine is about 7 years old and whilst I'm bored looking at it, it's certainly not looking old and tired.

Mind you, I know someone who has had four new kitchens inside 15 years, so clearly some people do see it as being just as temporary as any other home decor.

Fireinthegrate · 10/09/2018 13:14

14 years old.
We replaced the dishwasher and the hob a year ago and will probably need to replace the ovens next year.
We might update it by changing cupboard doors, but don't think we'll put in a whole new kitchen as we will probably only love her for another 5-6 years

I hate the layout of mine. So looking to reshuffle and need matching bits but i can't justify the cost of replacing.

It was here when we bought the house in 2012. We haven’t replaced it.

It’s probably 12 - 15 years old

ThisIsTheNational · 10/09/2018 13:17

Just over a year old, but was put in to replace a 30 year old one, when we moved the internal walls.

themadhatterswench · 10/09/2018 13:18

Ours is 18 years old and some doors need replacing but the carcasses are sound. That said it's like a cheap looking veneer birch wood so can imagine our buyers will want to replace asap!

NetballHoop · 10/09/2018 13:18

Ours was put in in 2000. Apart from a few tweaks here and there it's still fine.

AvoidingDM · 10/09/2018 13:18

Shock.Thats about 4 years a kitchen. So would tie with the 7 year average. Although their can't be many people who do that.

mine is the original kitchen in a 1970's house.

TechnologicalAbyss · 10/09/2018 13:20

5 years. It's cheap and badly made. We'll probably try to renovate it in a couple of years, but it would have to last forever!

kaytee87 · 10/09/2018 13:20

My kitchen was 16yo, has just been ripped out and is currently being replaced with a much better quality one that I hope will last 20 years.

FrettyFifties · 10/09/2018 13:22

Mine is 3 years old but the last one was 18 and I hated it but couldn't justify replacing it until we had the kitchen wall taken out!!
This one will be here as long as we are - subject to updating electrical kit and repainting as required. Decades I hope!

LusaCole · 10/09/2018 13:23

New in July this year!

Before then, not sure. It was there when we moved into the property 11 years ago, and it didn't look brand new then by any means.

GoodbyeSummer · 10/09/2018 13:24

I think ours was brand new when we moved in nearly 7 years ago (we had to saw the end off the pipe that the washer drains into). It's still in good nick and was gutted properly. It's a housing association house though so we certainly won't be replacing it every 7 years!

Aebj · 10/09/2018 13:26

Ours is now about 4 years old. We changed it , as although the house is only 15 years old, we brought the worst house in the street. We had to paint everywhere when we first moved in and the kitchen was the first big project we did. We’ve been in the house 8 years now. No plan on changing it anytime soon.
Next project when we’ve saved up is the bathrooms

DameDaffodil · 10/09/2018 13:27

About 45 years old I think! We have bought a house that is pure 70s and 80s from top to bottom, woodchip on walls and ceilings and orange and brown migraine inducing carpets! We're gradually working our way through but the kitchen is actually in good condition, just incredibly dated, so we've prioritised other things for now. Can't wait to get a new one though and get rid of the beige and brown marble effect formica worktops and matching cupboard doors! Shock

blueskiesandforests · 10/09/2018 13:33

Cheap (or rather mediocre quality, it's not necessarily price paid that's relevant) kitchens do get a bit down at heel after 10 years I think. Doesn't mean you "need" a new one, but it starts to feel like a nice to have.

We have an eleven year old ikea kitchen and it falls into that mediocre quality, down at heel category. It's perfectly serviceable. We got it in a rush because we moved into a house with an empty room for a kitchen (plumbing and electrics but not even a sink or tap) with a toddler in tow eleven years ago so rapid installation was top priority, and we weren't expecting to be here this long!

Really good quality kitchens can last decades.

Murinae · 10/09/2018 13:38

I think ours is about 20 years old. We wanted a replacement part for the range cooker a couple of years ago and they said the serial number meant it was 18 years old. It’s looking tired in parts but all the cupboards are still sound.

Glitteryfrog · 10/09/2018 13:38

Ours is mid-late 90s.
We had it refreshed with new doors etc earlier in the year.

Murinae · 10/09/2018 13:39

We also just sold MILs house with a kitchen from 1976 in it! Think the new buyers ripped it out within a week.

LoniceraJaponica · 10/09/2018 13:41

Ours was put in when the house was built 22 years ago. The laminate on a couple of the doors is going, but other than that it is still in good nick. We did have the wooden work surfaces replaced 8 years ago as the wood had gone black round the sink. We also had a new sink and taps installed at the same time.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 10/09/2018 13:47

New house 4 years ago. We upgraded the hob and oven and have replaced the laminate worktop with quartz.

FlurkenSchnit · 10/09/2018 13:49

Ours is just over a year old - we moved into this house around 18 months ago and the kitchen was the first room we did, it was in a very sorry state (damp and rotten) as was/is the rest of the house.

Don't envisage redoing the kitchen for a very long time now and hopefully we will have moved from here by the time it needs replacing next!

HalfStar · 10/09/2018 13:52

About 25 years. We are itching to replace, it's awful, but can't quite figure out how/where everyone comes up with the funds for a kitchen makeover. We used up all our money buying the house 3 yrs ago.
