How easy is it to take in a dress several sizes?

I’m a bridesmaid in less than 2 weeks. 25 weeks pregnant so maternity dress was ordered based on my pre-pregnancy measurements (taken by dress shop). Dress arrived today and it’s huge. Not just on bump but so big it falls to ground if on without the straps. (Wedding is in a city several hundred miles away which is where the dress came from).

I have an appointment with a dressmaker but I’m thinking this is going to be a bigger job than I expected. Dress took months to get in so too late to change it now.

How complicated is this likely to be to fix? My friend is very stressed already so want to get it sorted quickly!

I got a dress for a wedding that was two sizes too big for me. It fell off when I tried it on when I bought it. I was six months’ pregnant when I wore it and a dressmaker took it in perfectly. At the time of ordering, I asked how many sizes too big I should buy it and she recommended two.

Hope it all works out as well with your dress.

I think it depends on the style of dress, how many layers, fabric etc as to the ease or not of alterations. A good dressmaker will do a good job to make it fit, even if they have to adjust the style a little.

This is definitely more than 2 sizes too big. Although as it’s an empire line it doesn’t matter if it’s too big from the bust down, won’t be flattering but will be wearable. It’s a non-stretchy sequinned material. I can’t quite understand how it’s so huge considering I was measured by a professional.

A good dressmaker will be able to tailor it to fit you perfectly.

Thank you all. Dressmaker said it needs to be taken in around 8 inches! But she thinks it is doable due to shape of dress and is leaving me and bump a little growing room! Looked a lot better pinned in with ribbons where straps will be!
