Hi can anybody with a Mirena coil tell me if it's normal to feel a bit odd and disorientated for a couple of days?

I had it put in later on on Friday and it's now Sunday evening and I just feel a little strange and slightly sick and my stomach feels a bit tender, they told me I could feel like this on the way home and that's fine but I really want to know how long it could go on for? I just feel a bit fragile and unlike myself is the only way I can describe it.

Is this normal, does everyone feel a bit strange at first? Will I be feeling my normal self soon when i settle with it?

I had one fitted a few years ago and I also experienced this. From what I recall it lasted about 48 hours and then I had some cramps and tenderness for a few days after that.

I wouldn't be worried at this point but it may be worth seeing if you can get a phone appointment with a nurse at your GP surgery tomorrow if you need some further reassurance.

Faffing about with the cervix can irritate the vagus nerve, which in some people can cause nausea, dizziness, feeling a bit shaky.

It usually settles fairly quickly; if it's still happening 3 days later I would ask the nurse to check that the Mirena is still correctly in place and not dropping slightly so it presses against the cervix.

Thank you both so much.

Thanks for that information TheThird I think that's what is happening. If i still feel odd tomorrow I'll give them a call. Thank you I really appreciate knowing about that!

Had one fitted 5 years ago, then a second one fitted last month to replace the original. Both times felt really out of sorts for a few days - tired, definitely felt a little fragile, almost overly emotional, definite feeling that something was up but couldn’t put my finger on what if you get what I mean. Good news is it settled after a few days and the lack of any other side effect (for me at least) make it worth it. You’re definitely not alone!

Hint for when it all settles down, don't use a mooncup. Pulled my mirena out and meant all the discomfort was wasted!

Thanks everyone, I feel a lot better today! Smile

GetSome that is bad news, I do like to use a mooncup since my periods got really heavy but hopefully they won't be now.

Can I still use one if I'm really slow and careful when removing it?

I doubt you'll need the mooncup. I bled a lot but now, with Morena, I only need a liner for the three or four days I spot a year.

Mirena! Blimming autocorrect

ALadyofLetters · 10/09/2018 10:41

You can use mooncups. I was more diligent about breaking the seal before removing it. I have only had one period since getting the coil though. It is brilliant! I wish I’d got one years ago.

DanglyEar I use a mooncup as normal after my Mirena was inserted and haven't had a problem. Mind you, periods are so light now that I only need a panty liner (yippeeee!!!!! after years of emptying said mooncup every hour for the first two days of period its heaven!)

If you take it out properly ie by squeezing the edges in to break the suction you will be fine Smile

DanglyEarOrnaments · 10/09/2018 20:29

Oh thank you all that is very good news indeed! Smile

To be fair, i was pretty happy. I bled constantly for 4 months pretty much after insertion but I am the odd one out amongst friends!

After my first one (19 years ago) when I was 35, I did feel a bit odd for a couple of days afterwards. I can remember coming home and telling my 16 year old DD that she would have to get her own dinner as I was going to bed! I did and slept solidly for 10 hours. I still felt a bit strange the next day but back to normal by the third day. When I had my second one fitted 6 years later,I was fine, and again when I had the third one,7 years after that.
