remember that Isabella of France was brought from her home country and married to Edward II at the age of 12. Edward II was gay. She had to trail around England behind him and his lover until his lover was caught by disapprovers and hacked to death. Edward and Isabella had a falling out and he banned her from seeing their children. Some years later when she'd regained power she had him brutally murdered with a red hot poker shoved up his backside (imagine having that on your conscience when you're trying to sleep at night!) and just when she thought she had it made her son turned around, and, typical teenager, rebelled against her, seized her land and left her powerless. Oh, and he (the son) had Isabella's lover killed, just to put the cherry on top of her cake.

See now, that puts your stressful job, trying kids and maddening OH in another light doesn't it!

I know troll hunting is forbidden, but you’ve obviously made that up.

I need to try smoking weed while reading historical stories. Sounds mint.

Honey, the writers for Eastenders couldn't make this up! Wink Grin

Reading this at the mo (audiobook - I'm a bit lazy). You're right, it's hard to believe so many crap things happened to one poor woman! (or queen).

PlainVanilla · 09/09/2018 23:13

Eleanor of Aquitaine was much better!

CoughArghCoughArghCough · 09/09/2018 23:15

Aah she was great Grin I grew up near Castle Rising Castle where she lived later on on her life, and she was apparently a bit of a party animal, and took no nonsense. Had no idea about the red hot poker though! I went there loads as a child and never experienced anything spooky - this link would have you believe otherwise Wink great-castles.com/risingghost.php

elephantoverthehill · 09/09/2018 23:26

The red hot poker incident was supposed to have happened at Berkley Castle, although there is debate about it and whether it was the method of death, some say he went to Ireland and then to Rome. But we loved the gory story as children.

BalloonSlayer · 10/09/2018 07:22

Not sure that's one for the list of "reasons to feel sorry for her" really, is it? Poor love, she had terrible pangs of guilt for murdering someone, bless her. Hmm

ISendNoComplimentsToYourMother · 10/09/2018 07:26

There is a theory that I read somewhere that the red hot poker was revenge for Edwards (second) lover raping her with Edwards agreement. She apparently got on ok with his first lover.

GlacindaTheTroll · 10/09/2018 07:33

All of today's school children know about the manner of his death. Blame Horrible Histories

'A red hot poker killed Ed two
That must have hurt him lots"

Oh, I'm not saying you should feel sorry for her for it!! Just that in comparison the average mumsnetter will be leading a far more mundane, far less harrowing life.

Mumsnetter's 'To-Do' list: Buy milk, drop kids at tennis, shove something in slow cooker, make conference call, declutter wardrobe

Isabella's 'To-Do' list: Decide upon the most brutal method of torturing husband to death

Edward 2nd, by Christopher Marlowe. Did it for A level. The red hot poker is seared into my memory!

some years later when she'd regained power she had him brutally murdered with a red hot poker shoved up his backside

a myth with no factual basis

HollowTalk · 10/09/2018 20:31

Apparently she married at 7 and was widowed at 10.

RubyFlint · 10/09/2018 22:58
