Two identical sofas? Two different sofas? One sofa, two chairs?

Dear god I am becoming my mother.

We have moved and I have acquired a good sitting room (definitely becoming my mother).

The sofa that I keep coming back to is this Next one,www.next.co.uk/homeware/sofas-chairs/wilson/size-large-sofa-(3-seats)-fabric-tweedy-blend-light-silver-feet-low-retro-tapered-light#fabric_DMn:0_DMx:12

(hope that link works).

I can't decide whether to get two of them, or any other combination!

That's nice. I have two sofas and a chair. One of the sofas and the chair are brown leather ( a big no no on MN) and the other sofa is a cream valour type fabric. I like the contrast.
No advice as it depends on the size and shape of your room and the number of people you need to seat. There's only two of us but I like to stretch out!

SofaHunt · 09/09/2018 16:20

The room is very neutral (new build) so no interesting features really.

I think I'd need to seat four people really, but this is my good room so ideally just myself Grin

Two sofas and a stool. Very large teal velour type material corner sofa with matching large stool and fabric grey sofa. Neutral walls, grey curtains and lampshades with a large teal rug. Seems to work.

We have a one/two/three set. Pretty usual for our part of America.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2018 17:10

I have 2 identical 3 seater sofas but they have different scatter cushions on them so they don’t look matchy.

Tidypidy · 09/09/2018 17:12

We've got 2 3 seaters and an armchair. White Chair and 1 sofa that match from Ikea via charity shop and other sofa in harmonising colour also from charity shop. Five of us at home so we can spread out as required!

JungWan · 09/09/2018 17:15

i'd get two the same shape but one a two seater and one three seater. I'd do different colours, it'd look good so long as the shape of the sofas was the same. Throw one of the cushions from the big sofa on to the small one.

DryHeave · 09/09/2018 17:17

I’ve just ordered two sofas and a large storage footstool. Sofas for grown ups and stool for overflow children. Leaves room for the Christmas tree as well as can move stool out of bay window for December.

SofaHunt · 09/09/2018 18:40

I'm tempted to get a colour for a smaller sofa and a larger grey one.

We’ve just got sofas from Next (not those ones though). We have two three seaters and two occasional chairs from Made.com in the bay.

We usually use the room in the evening and during the day we use the kitchen/dining/living room. There’s a sofa in there too.

We went for the same colour, but have bright cushions of different colours on each sofa.

I have just been through this dilemma with DH. He wanted to randomly throw together chairs from all over the place. I disagreed with his choices and said I don't mind mixing fabrics if the style is the same or mixing styles if the fabric is the same. Ie there needs to be something which ties them together.
This is just a rule I made up for me as I am not very creative so prone to making mistakes about what goes together and may not work for everyone.
We eventually chose a 2 seater sofa in grey, a love seat in dark teal and an armchair with footstool in a grey/teal stripe fabric. All from the same range so the styles of the chairs are the same.
Not sure if this will work yet as furniture is still on order.

WeeM · 09/09/2018 18:57

I’m a fan of going non matching now. I have a 3 seat sofa and then a chair in a different colour. Or get 2 matching sofas and then a big footstool in different colour/pattern maybe. Love that grey sofa though.

SofaHunt · 09/09/2018 19:03

There's quite a lot of teal about, that sounds lovely.

I really do like that sofa, but I'm not sure if it's a complimentary sofa or a main sofa

PickAChew · 09/09/2018 19:08

Have you sat on that one? They had it in our local Next and it was weirdly bouncy to sit on. Quite disappointing.

SofaHunt · 09/09/2018 19:09

I have sat on it and quite enjoyed it! I didn't think it was bouncy, it felt quite sturdy....

We have a big brown leather sofa and a small teal one. Also in a new build and matchy matchy felt a bit too blah.

I also have a complete mish mash of cushions.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 09/09/2018 19:15

Racecardriver · 09/09/2018 19:16

Matching sofa sets are quite naff. I would go for different but obviously complimentary sofas and chairs. A nice way to tie them in together is to use cushions/throws in the colours of the the other sofa/chair (but not the exact same fabric mind you).

AnnabelleLecter · 09/09/2018 19:19

We have a two seater sofa and a four seater. Both modern but different styles and contrasting but still complimentary colours.

SofaHunt · 09/09/2018 19:19

That's lovely Yippee!

I’d probably go for two sofas in either similar styles but different fabrics or the same colour but different styles so not too matchy matchy. I’m not a fan of matchy matchy and the one sofa and two chairs all matching look just reminds me of my grandparents.

Fstar · 09/09/2018 19:24

If you want a feature/ guest chair i have this as my dressing room chair and cant recommend it enough

AvoidingDM · 09/09/2018 21:27

I went for 2 matching sofas (with the intent to get different cushions). Mainly so that I could swap them around to get even wear on them.
