Headphones keep breaking

No response in geeky stuff so posting here in hope of enlightenment!

Ds (13) can't seem to go for a few months without his headphones breaking. We have tried different brands, checked reviews etc but still they stop working. He uses them for gaming mainly but also for listening to music. I've kept an eye on him/them but he doesn't appear to be doing anything to break them.

The gaming headphones tend to be around the £25 mark. So was thinking maybe I need to spend more? Last pair lasted a month. However his wireless headphones that he uses with his phone were £60 and lasted a record 6 months...but I would at least expect a couple of years use??

maybe try skullcandy headphones? I would say yes, it is worth spending more on gaming headphones. but perhaps you could pick up a pair on ebay specifically for gaming, and then get another pair on there for listening to music? if each pair aren''t being used for everything then they may last longer.

it will be more expensive at first, but if they last then it will definitely be worth the money.

all the best

Have you any idea what he does to them? My daughter has similar issues, but since me and DH are techy, we opened up the headphones and found the issue. She isn’t careful in how she unplugs and takes them off her head. So the connection inside, where the cable meets the earphones had come lose. Bit of solder and it was fine. Another time the cable had sheared inside near the jack. Replaced the cable with one from some old ones and worked fine.

Is he pulling them from the device by pulling on the cable? (Rather than holding the jack)

Or taking them off his head by riving on the cable instead of lifting them gently by both earpieces ? Or dropping his phone and having the headphone cable save the fall like some kind of phone bungee jump?

Oh, and our cat attacks the cables, we’ve had 2 casualties to the little furry git. She bit through one cable. Hard to see but if you look closely you can see the damage.

Id suggest either going Bluetooth or getting some headphones that have a removable cable. Then if they stop working you can try just replacing the cable. (I have some nice skull candy ones like that)

If they are only a few months old keep your receipts and take them back, they usually have a years warranty.

I've had turtle beach headphones that have stopped working replaced by tesco twice, they should be made better so they can stand reasonable wear and tear and it's only if they get loads of returns theyll look at improving their quality.

but them from amazon and return when broken- my ds gets through wireless ones in under a year and they replace or refund overtime.

Thanks all, for the useful suggestions. Will consider skullcandy in future.

Yes we have just replaced both sets of headphones using the warranties from Amazon/Argos. But the warranties will run out at some point - wondering whether getting cheap or more expensive ones will be more economical.

Furx he always removes the headphones carefully so that's not the problem. On closer inspection I can see the jack on his gaming ones are bent - he has just revealed that he recently dropped his controller and yanked on the cable! The other thing he does quite frequently is pull the cable out (albeit by the jack) so that I can listen to what his oh so hilarious friends are saying - I wonder if doing too much of that could attribute. His non-gaming pair are wireless - but he reckons they take ages to charge or he always forgets to do it overnight so ends up plugging them in. Finally - we also have cats!! I've never seen them play with the wires but then I never thought they went on the kitchen counter until I discovered their footprints. So he has agreed to always put his headphones away.
