Best stain remover? I could weep over ds's uniform!

Ds started school last week, he did two days. The two jumpers he wore are absolutely filthy! I know everyone says they get messy but they really are pretty bad. It's paint and mud mainly and the Vanish stain remover I used one the first one hasn't got it out. I'm starting to think that the 3 jumpers I bought was hopelessly optomistic but at £14 each I was hoping to manage. Any top stain removing tips?

If it's whiteboard marker you'll never get it off (bitter experience).

Allyg1185 · 09/09/2018 18:17

Hairspray. Spray onto the stain allow to dry then wash as normal

3 days my grandson has been in reception, 3 half days come to think of it as he was doing til 12 o'clock for the first week. Pen down his sleeve already that won't wash off!

I use the astonish bar soap. If really bad rub in and soak first.

Soaked overnight in cold water and vanish then use the vanish bar on the stained bits. I never got away with 3. We always have 5.

WinkysTeatowel · 09/09/2018 19:56

30 is only for things that aren't dirty IMO. I wash all my DD's stuff at 40 because it's always dirty.

lucysmam · 09/09/2018 19:58

Vodka for fresh whiteboard marker...(up to you whether you drink it or blot the stain with it Wink). It breaks down the marker pen so be careful not to saturate it or it might spread.

I like Asda's spray on stain remover, in a purple bottle. I think it takes out loads more than Vanish does 🙂

onwardsandupwardsagain · 09/09/2018 20:30

Vanish, not the spray , the hard bar soap will remove any stain

steppemum · 09/09/2018 20:34

ok, mud, food and washable paint should all come out in normal wash, but not at 30.
white board pen - dab it with nail varnish remover before washing.

black washable paint though isn't washable and does stain.

Most stains do wash out eventually, we always used clean but stained clothes and over a few washes the stains come out

InDubiousBattle · 09/09/2018 20:39

Thanks so much. I suspect I'll have the opportunity to try all of your suggestions, most likely by the end of the week! You'd honestly think I would be better at washing given that I do so bloody much of it!

I've had some good results on stain removal with a Vanish bar. Dampen the stain, rub the bar on, leave a couple of hours, then wash as usual. I got tomato soup strains out of oatmeal-coloured jumper where spray stain treatments had failed.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 10/09/2018 13:31

I've now got white shirts that have blue blobs on them where a sticky label has snuck into the wash and transferred ink to the. Rewashed, soaked, washed again... Its not coming out!

peridito · 10/09/2018 13:55

I know this isn't the point but why on earth aren't washable paints used ?

NutBiscuit · 10/09/2018 13:59

I highly recommend Ace. Its the only stain remover I've found that actually works on DS's gross school uniform, and by the end of last year his shirts were still in pretty good shape. Whenever I've used Vanish, the stain hasn't come out properly, and by then I've "set the stain" as my DM used to cry

lynmilne65 · 10/09/2018 14:09

The giant pink one is Vanish

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/09/2018 14:11

Vanish foam carpet cleaner

EleanorLavish · 10/09/2018 14:12

I'd be washing it at 60, its the only way to get the stains out IME.

happymummy12345 · 10/09/2018 14:15

Vanish is rubbish. I swear by shout stain remover. But it is hard to find these days. We find it in Asda sometimes.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 10/09/2018 14:21

I've raised four kids and never had any difficulty getting mud and poster/powder/watercolour paint out of their stuff with decent bio powder on a 40 wash.

Oil paints and PVA are a different matter.

Yokohamajojo · 10/09/2018 14:28

As a mum of two football playing boys I find that mud will not disappear by just putting the dirty garments in the wash but they have to be scrubbed/soaked first and then it comes out after a wash.

I also wash all school and football clothes in 40

Yokohamajojo · 10/09/2018 14:28

oh and also fairy liquid I find work wonders on a lot of stains.

britnay · 10/09/2018 14:33

Honestly, its not worth it. I swear my eldest used to wallow in the mud kitchen at nursery; he came home filthy every day. And don't even get me started on "washable" pens/paint. Washable, my arse!

I keep a clean, unused shirt each year for school photo day, and the rest just stays washed but stained.
