Best way of turning up school trousers?

DS is starting school on monday and I need to turn up his trousers - they're currently about 5 inches too long! Does anyone know a way of doing this that allows the hem to be let down again when he grows? I've hemmed plenty of my own trousers before but don't want to trim off all the excess material and have to buy new ones as soon as he grows. I can either hand sew or use the invisible hem function on my machine. TIA!

5 inches! Blimey. To be honest, I doubt you'll be able to bring the hems down as he grows...kids get through school trousers very quickly...by the time he's grown 5 inches, I can pretty much guarantee they won't be wearable any more! If you can afford it, I'd keep them for when he grows and buy him a cheapo supermarket pair for now.

I agree with formerbabe. Keep them for when they fit. If you take them up he'll have gone through the knees before they need letting down.

Oh, er, ok. Thanks. Tbh I wasn't expecting to retain the whole 5 inches, just a bit of allowance for when he grows. The trousers do seem incredibly long for the waist size...

Cut off the excess and use the material to patch the knees!

Bondaweb is great for these types of adjustments.

Are you near shops? You might be easier just swapping them for a different shaped pair.
