Things no one told you about new borns

DS is nearly 7 weeks old. I knew (or was warned) what to expect with the first nappy and sleepless nights. But no one told me to expect the baby to grunt while sleeping and if the grunting stops I'll be checking to see if he's ok.

I also expected to love him right away but the first few weeks just felt like I was babysitting but now I can't sleep as I just can't stop looking at him.

Before DS came along people moaned (in jest) about the sleepless nights but I enjoy our 3am feed (DS goes to bed at 10:30, feeds at 3am and 7am - is this normal or am I just lucky?)

Is there anything you discovered with a newborn which you wasn't warned about?

I think you are pretty lucky with the 3am and 7am feeds. At that age mine would only sleep with a nipple in their mouths.

@OrangeTowel I mean projectile poo! I remember my friends baby pooing from one side of the room to the other. All poo has so far been in a nappy!

I’ve got three week old twins.

Nobody ever told me how funny babies are. Their facial expressions and little ways crack me up every dayGrin I also can’t get over how different they are personality wise. I’ve never really had much to do with babies and basically assumed they were all very similar.

I thought 0-3 months clothes would be better value than "newborn", not realising the relatively large size difference. Even though DD1 was quite big at 8lb, we still had to rush out and get newborn clothes to fit her for the first few weeks.

That a car seat isn’t an alternative Cot. I had no idea first time around and used to settle dd in her car seat for hours. Somehow second time round I got the memo this is really dangerous and thank my lucky stars nothing bad happend.

How incredibly hard it is, yet wonderful at the same time. That it will push you and your DH further apart yet closer together at the same time. 4 week old with colic here!

That you turn round one day and they are 22.....

Definitely as a PP said the fact they get so angry and upset about being tired, before going to sleep!

No-one told me about ‘unhappy hour’ (or two or three) late afternoon when they’re so tired and will just scream regardless of what you try.

Also that they’re the snuggliest little things ever and cuddling them feels like you’ve won the lottery.

actualpuffins Same here! Had to stop at a large Sainsbury's on the way home to buy some stuff that fitted.

Someone asked me how old DS was and I mumbled "about 30 hours" in a bit of a daze.
