Does anyone else feel sorry for inanimate objects

My phone is knackered and today I decided to upgrade. All done and I was very excited about my shiny new phone. Until I picked the old one up and felt a bit sad.

Its been a good phone, delivered some lovely messages, some sad ones, some unpleasant ones, some plain boring ones. I just feel a bit sorry for it that a better one is going to come along and take its place on my whim. Its done nothing wrong (if you don't count the microphone no longer working and the camera lens being a little scratched but we all get old right).

Obviously it's a sodding phone, it has no feelings, I'll recycle it and all will be well. And yet I still feel a little sorry for it. (lighthearted obviously but also true :))

I got very attached to a teddy bear I saw once at a cafe in Edinburgh. I couldn't stop staring at it and thinking what it was going to do when the cafe closed. I'm crackers

MrsMozart · 07/09/2018 16:41

Y'up. Have a ridiculous level of worrying about the welfare of inanimate objects.

I apologise to my car if I hit a speed bump wrong.

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 07/09/2018 16:42

Yes every night I move the owl doorstop from the kitchen door to close it. When I do this job I pick it up and put it next to the TV. When my husband does it he kicks it out of the way. I have been known on many occasions to apologise to the doorstop owl for his behaviour. Grin

I was choosing a teddy in a shop as a gift. Picked one up and felt sorry for the one sat next to it. So I put the first one back and picked up the other one. Then felt I'd let the first one down so I left them both. Yep, I'm crackers. And maybe slightly unhinged. Hmm

TeaMeBasil · 07/09/2018 16:46

Yup, this is me, especially with old phones. I feel bad for it, & guilty...it's not normal but I can't help it!

villainousbroodmare · 07/09/2018 16:46

Sometimes I feel sorry for the clothes that I don't take on holiday. Grin

And I have a real affection for some items that I know I can rely on to be comfortable or look good.

Babdoc · 07/09/2018 16:51

Oh, yes, definitely! I always apologise to my old car when I trade it in for a new one, and tell it I hope it finds a nice second owner. I have been known to chat to household objects while cleaning them. I think it might be force of habit from chatting to the kids when they were babies/toddlers, to develop their language - that continual stream of “Now, we’re just going to eat this, and mummy will clean up your face afterwards and ooh look there’s a butterfly on the window...” etc etc.
But I doubt the fridge is really interested in whether its shelves are going to have a nice wipe or not!

NCNCNC123 · 07/09/2018 16:55

Yes! I don't tend to talk to household objects (I have my pets for that and, failing that, I just talk to myself) but I do feel sorry for them.

Food, especially. I tried a diet once where you were meant to leave a mouthful of food on the plate. to get out of the habit of having to empty it regardless of how full you were. Great in theory, but I just couldn't do it in practice. Even trying to convince myself it would have fun in the compost pile didn't help.

Musicalstatues · 07/09/2018 16:58

Yes, I rearrange soft toys in shops if they look uncomfortable Blush

PawneeParksDept · 07/09/2018 16:59

I feel sorry for abandoned teddies in charity shops too

keiratwiceknightly · 07/09/2018 16:59

I always feel a bit sad for jars of food that aren't fresh enough. You know the message on the lid that says "reject if button can be depressed"? Well, it's already depressed, don't make it feel worse by rejecting it too!

Undercoverbanana · 07/09/2018 17:00

I worry about my water-butt when it doesn’t rain.

Notagainagainagain · 07/09/2018 17:01

I’m glad I’m not the only one! But why, why do we do this?!

BELLAARA · 07/09/2018 17:02

Yes!! I have to break apple cores in half when I put them in the bin, so that they don't get lonely.

SecretWitch · 07/09/2018 17:02

Yes. I have favourite coffee cups that I pick over and over. The other cups just hang out on the shelf in a forlorn manner. I whisper once in a while that hope is not lost, when we have a crowd over they will be chosen. I still think they are pissed, though.

AnneWiddecombesHandbag · 07/09/2018 17:05

Yes I have a kettle I've had since 2009. DH wants I get a flash dualit one. I can't bring myself to replace my trusty kettle while it still works because it doesn't deserve to be treated like that!

goingonabearhunt1 · 07/09/2018 17:07

I love teddies (hence username) and always feel sorry for bears in charity shops and have to restrain myself from bringing them all home. I am insane.

NoSleepzzzz · 07/09/2018 17:11

I get this and especially about food. I feel dreadfully sorry for the rogue baked bean that doesn't make it out of the tin with the rest of them 😭

DontGoIntoTheLongGrass · 07/09/2018 17:14

I feel sorry for dd's baby doll. I tuck it in if she's left it laying about and uncover its face if it's covered. Dh thinks I'm weird.

However I also found most stuff we own can understand us anyway. If we talk about replacing something it will then actually die on us within the same freaking week. Even if it didn't need replacing or it wasn't that old. Had it happen to the oven, wardrobes, washer, dryer. Now I refuse to discuss us getting a new TV in front of the old one incase it hears us !

nicebitofquiche · 07/09/2018 17:14

Yes. Broken down cars by a roadside.

EggbertHeartsTina · 07/09/2018 17:15

Sometimes I leave my bike locked at the station overnight and I always apologise to it when I come to collect it the following day Blush

TheSassyAssassin · 07/09/2018 17:17

I may have cried felt quite emotional when saying goodbye to previous cars and had to give myself a good talking to so folk in the showroom didn't see me! It's the attached memories. The fun trips. The not so fun ones. The car picnics and conversations. The passing years the car has been part of.... Blush

Avocado0nToast · 07/09/2018 17:19

I nearly cried when I traded my old car for a shiny new one. There was nothing wrong with him, he just was looking tired and liable to break down soon. He brought both my babies back from the hospital, and I still imagine him sitting there forlornly watching us drive away. Noticed tha I've called it 'him' as well!!

MissVanjie · 07/09/2018 17:19

Oh god, always

I’m glad it’s not just me!

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/09/2018 17:20

Oh I had a thread about a tin of sweetcorn a while ago because DH realised as I cooked that I shook the tin til every kernel was out, asked why and I explained that if I left any in the tin it would be lonely and not fulfil their destiny.

I hald expected everyone to tell me I'd fully lost the plot but it turns out loads of people are as odd as I am about feeling sorry for food/inanimate objects. I love it.

I also apologise to bunches of flowers whenever I have to throw them on the compost heap.
