Can anxiety cause palpitations for days?

I suffer from palpitations and had all the tests done which came back normal, so I put down to anxiety. I have been getting palpitations since Tuesday evening. Palpitations with no other symptoms. Can anxiety cause palpitations for days? I'm seeing a nurse today.

I had this a few months ago. Had my bloods done and Ferratin was low. Dr prescribed iron tablets for a month and they went. I'd definitely get some iron tablets/multivitamins if I were you.

Bowlofbabelfish · 07/09/2018 21:36

Don’t take iron without checking with your doctor. Low ferritin doesn’t always mean low iron levels functionally, I’d see your GP to check this out, and ask if iron is something you can/should take.

Although my ferritin is low, doctor did say unless I'm losing hair I don't need supplement. I think I take a multivitamin instead so I don't overdose.

Yes, I had this for a week as part of a long lasting panic attack.

During the sleepless nights of hell, at one point I measured my pulse at 140 ppm where it stayed hour after hour after hour.

Didn't sleep a single wink for 6 nights straight until my Dr. proscribed Zimovane which got me a few hours sleep, followed by Mirtazapine which slowed my heart rate to below 100.

Took about 3 months to recover, but still suffer palpitations a few times a week due to general anxiety.

My palpitations are more of a pounding heartbeat rather than a racing hearts. I get ectopic too.

I went through a stage of palpitations especially near to my period. I had various tests but all come back normal. I've put it down to perimenopause, I was 41 at the time and now 44 and getting other weird symptoms.

foodanddrink · 08/09/2018 10:11

Palpitations are still here. Where shall I get an ECG, apart from A&E?

OP posts:
Owletterocks · 08/09/2018 11:31

I think A&E would be your only option on a Saturday. Continuous palpitations for as long as you have had them would definitely warrant a trip to A&E in my opinion. Are you feeling dizzy at all?

MrBeansXmasTurkey · 08/09/2018 11:39

I am not sure if you need A&E right away OP others may be better able to advise or you could call 111.

About palpitations in general though I had a problem with palpitations when feeling anxious and found cutting out all caffeine helped. I can now have small amounts again. I think the caffeine and anxiety was a bad combination esp as I was drinking a lot of coffee due to not sleeping well because of anxiety and that became a bit of a vicious circle.

ClemClemFandango · 08/09/2018 12:50

I have palpitations (ectopic), particularly when I'm stressed, they get worse around my period/ovulation and much worse if I don't eat. Apparently it's all normal. However, if they persisted for a week I'd definitely get them checked out, just to be on the safe side. Do you have a local walk-in centre? If not, call 111 and ask their advice.

foodanddrink · 08/09/2018 17:00

I called 111 and was told to go to A&E. Had ECG and blood tests. All came back normal and I am now waiting for 24 hr ECG.

foodanddrink · 08/09/2018 20:40

After ECG and blood tests I was told to wait in the Ambulatory Care to be seen by the Advanced Nurse Practitioner. Is this the same as A&E? The reason I ask is that the nurse there ordered a 24 hr ECG and said she will call if there is concerns regarding results, otherwise I will not hear from her. She said all the results will be sent to the GP but from past experiences, my GP told me they don't receive results from A&E.

I had lots of episodes of these before I was diagnosed with Addison’s disease and anaemia. You need a cortisol blood test to check for Addison’s (and then it’s another blood test after that if something shows up) but it’s not done as standard so may be worth asking for as they would not necessarily have done them already. I didn’t have any other symptoms, apart from anxiety which can also be a symptom of Addison’s and anaemia.

Of course it may not be that at all, but that is just my own experience. Since I’ve been on steridos and iron tablets I feel back to normal.
