How often does luggage go missing?

Just reading over the Ryanair thread regarding the new charges for taking luggage on board and people talking about cabin luggage being more popular due to people being worried about putting bags in the hold in case they go walkabouts.

I don't fly a lot but how often does this happen? Has it happened to many here?
Say 1 in 100 bags... Would that be right give or take for bags going missing between the check in desk and the plane itself?

I’ve had mine lost at least 30 times, but I travel a lot. At one point 20+ flights in a week would not have been unusual.

Twice my luggage was just completely lost, about 10 times it’s shown up weeks/months later, and the other times it was couriered to me same day or overnight.

Semi regular traveling (2-10 times a year) x 20 years and I usually check a bag. I’ve lost my luggage maybe five times. It was always found within a few days.

Most times it was on the next flight. Once it was lost for I think three days.

Although it's never happened to me and I fly a reasonable amount, when going away with DP we pack our suitcases half full then swap them over and finish packing. Meaning if one of our cases went AWOL we would both have clothes to tide us over.

I’ve often had luggage go AWOL: a couple of times flying BA, but more often with KLM via Schipol. Always got it back but sometimes it has taken a few days and a lot of phone calls to chase it up. Last time I was visiting family in the Scottish highlands and I had just my handbag. Cue quick trip to Inverness to buy everything I needed as you couldn’t buy anything halfway decent at my final destination. Nice set of receipts I sent the airline that time, though then I had to really chase the refund too.
