Flying on Ryanair and a bit confused by cabin bag rule. Been reading about priority boarding and tagging bags. What does this mean?

Following!

We just flew with them last weekend. Without priority boarding you can bring one handbag-sized bag onboard. You can bring bigger carry-on luggage to the gate, but you then have to hand it over to be put in the hold. With priority boarding you can take it with you on board.

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 20:41

So is it not like other airlines where you can take a bag roughly 35x20x20 in the cabin? I can't understand why you would do that rather than a larger bag in hold.

I don't know why I find it so confusing but I do!

I'd imagine it's because virtually no one pays for hold luggage on Ryanair flights and they always run out of space in the overhead lockers. and as it's Ryanair it's another good way to get people who want certain "privileges" to pay extra.

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 20:44

So how do you find out what size the bags can be as I thought the two bags could be same size?

I gave read the website incase you thought I was just being lazy!

@meiisme has explained it really well

If you have priority boarding you can take a small handbag plus a little cabin suitcase on the plane with you. If you don't you can only take the small handbag, you will have the little cabin suitcase taken off you at the gate and put in the hold to collect from the baggage reclaim when you land.

Regardless of priority boarding or not if you want a large case in the hold you need to pay.

The reason people like their little cabin sized suitcase in the hold is to prevent it going missing and so you don't have to wait when you land. If that doesn't bother you, don't pay.

Does that help?

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 20:59

Yes thanks!! All understood now😁

I think they've changed it and they no longer take cabin bags into the hold for free.
Basically you now pay for priority and take a cabin bag or you pay for a hold bag or you fly with a tiny bag that'll fit under the seat.

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 21:54

I thought it changed in November

New policy effective from November 1st

Ryanair’s baggage rules change every few months. The purpose of the changes is to catch out as many people as possible in order to maximise revenue from penalty fees.

goingtotown · 05/09/2018 21:59

Gushpanka
The changes start on 1st November.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 05/09/2018 22:01

Yes I’d understand that from Nov 1st you only get a small bag (that would fit under seat in front) free. If you want anything bigger there is a fee (varies by size of bag). If you fly out before Nov 1st and back after Nov 1st you have to abide by the rules on the date you travel (so in my case that means pay for cabin bags on the way back Hmm ). www.theguardian.com/business/2018/aug/23/ryanair-introduces-new-restrictions-on-cabin-luggage?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other

WeShouldBeFriends · 05/09/2018 22:02

I carefully read it all and took one tiny bag but they still took it off me because it had solid sides (ie, a case instead of a bag) It was about a third of the size of some rucksacks I saw going into the lockers. I will not fly with them again, it's really not worth it.

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 22:28

I desperately don't want to fly with them but they are the only airline travelling where we need to go that isn't extortionate.

OP posts:
Harry354 · 05/09/2018 22:29

we should be friends that doesn't make sense as should be ok until November.

bluemoonchances · 05/09/2018 22:31

When do you fly OP? Do you have priority boarding booked?

TheWinterofOurDiscountTentsMk2 · 05/09/2018 22:37

I don't know why people complain about them. They are cheap and handy and very clear about what the bag rules are, there is no desire to catch you out or trick you.
Ryanair totally drove down prices and made travel so much more affordable.

Harry354 · 05/09/2018 22:41

Trying to decide whether we need it or hold luggage. Going in October .

OP posts:
wowfudge · 05/09/2018 22:54

I priced up three low cost airlines for return flights to the same destination recently. If you had no luggage/didn't care about having a bag with you on the plane Ryanair were cheapest, but not by much depending on the flight times. If you wanted to check a bag there was very little in it. We're not bothered where we sit so aren't paying to be together/choose seats.

After a bad experience with Ryanair last year we vowed to avoid them where possible. They can charge someone else for sneezing with prior permission Grin.

wowfudge · 05/09/2018 22:55

Without!

ZenNudist · 05/09/2018 23:00

Flown return twice with Ryanair this year. Delayed for ages on 2/4 flights.

Am going to use a different airline next year.

Bag rules dont bother me. I check 2 hold bags so 40kg of luggage. I dont want to lug anything much round the airport.

NotAllIndividuals · 05/09/2018 23:04

I'll complain about them because until this week I thought you get what you pay for. Well, you don't. I have not had such an unpleasant experience with any other airline. They left me standing on tarmac holding a 7 month old without a buggy (had a sling so I could cope but that was because I didn't trust the bastards), which then took over an hour to be delivered to carousel and was damaged on arrival which they then lied about. That was after a 2.5 hour delay conveniently half an hour less than triggers compensation (and they delayed multiple flights to ensure no flights needed compo but as a result many more people suffered). They make money, that is their business, the fact that some people inadvertently end up in a different place (travel) is purely accidental. The will do everything they can to extract money out of you. You are kidding yourself if you think you have rights. They know the rules farrrr better than you and they will.play you. I will not use them again. If they are the only choice I'm not going. Sadly, I don't actually know if any of the alternatives are any better...
