Beavers camp kit list

Hi,
It is my DS6 first time away at beaver/cub/scout camp next weekend. He is so excited but I am a bit nervous about him being away. It is for 2 nights.

Can anyone tell me what I should send in his bag with him? They don't meet until Monday and I want to go and buy things that he might need this week. Thanks

Beavers can definitely camp in tents for whole weekends.

Full waterproofs, wellies, woolly hat and gloves (it can get cold at night). Shorts and tshirt. Some units have full sets of camp crockery, others require you to take your own. Check with leaders.
I find the big charity bags they drop through the door asking for donations are really good for wet and dirty camp clothes. I save them all for this reason.

I used to volunteer at Beaver camp. I would look after another group so I didn't stifle my childrens enthusiasm. Great fun. The beavers slept in centrally heated bunkhouses in those days. I froze in my tent. Sad they will be well looked after and have a wonderful time!

I tend to pack clothes as a day at a time for my son you can get dry sacs from larger Tesco. Joggers, 2socks, pants, 2 tshirts, jumper (fleece) as it saves rummaging in the rucksack. Usually 3 /4 sets recommended by our leaders. Sleeping bag, roll mat, wash kit &towel. Indoo shoes, waterproof warm coat gloves and hat and walking boots. Plenty of plastic bags for wet stuff.

Remember to label everything!!! You will probably end up with other people's stuff coming home but this seems normal when do goes camping 😂

Plastics bags to put wet/dirty clothes in. If your DS is anything like mine you might find a pair of socks in the dirty laundry bag and that is it (never changes his pants!). he just seems to layer up is clothes over the length of the camp!

If the weather isn't looking too good, it is always a good idea to pack everything in bin bags within the holdall at the start so they keep as dry as possible.

DS's towel only gets wet if they go swimming or have a water fight, and of course the towel then gets stuffed back in his bag amongst the clean, unworn clothes.

Label everything (including underwear!). You will inevitably gain/lose items of clothing.

Get your DS to pack his bag so he knows what is in there.

They may also need plate, bowl, mug, cutlery set, washing up towel. Usually keep these in drawstring bag

Get a decent thickness sleeping bag it gets cold at night and thick pj's.
Suggest he can where socks and jumper to bed if cold.
Pack a teddy/soft toy.

DS2 has camped in a tent with beavers. He loves it and it's really brought him out of his shell. I found the kit list supplied to be pretty good, they have a good idea of what is likely to be needed.

Popfan · 05/09/2018 21:26

They'll give you a list I'm sure! He'll wear the same clothes all weekend, including pants and socks, won't wash or clean his teeth ..... he'll love it! Grin

Sparklyfee · 05/09/2018 21:33

Fantastic. Thanks for the Trespass link. Off to have a browse.

I like the idea about him packing his own bag and separating into sets for each day. Keeps it simpler for him

Can I recommend you got to sports direct and buy the gelert sleeping bag for £25. It is lovely and thick and warm and will do him the whole way through scouting. It’s the one I always recommend to my cubs. It won’t break the bank, it has a stuff sack and compresses (he will get help with this) and has loads of growing room inside.
He May need crockery and cutlery. DS and I got a cutlery set for our use a couple of years ago from www.burntstuff.com a few years ago and it has our names laser engraved. This is more of a Christmas present as it is almost £10 but handy for those who don’t know what to get as a Christmas gift!
He will have an absolute whale of a time.

Our Beavers camp outside in tents.
I’ll add to Castleonacloud’s list - trainers, old trainers/water shoes if they are doing water sports, walking boots (possibly, don’t buy any especially yet! A headtorch rather than a hand held torch can be useful.

Label, label, label everything. After our last beaver/Cub/scout camp (I am a leader) we had over 60 items of lost property, which were unidentified, or unidentifiable. This is especially important for neckers and uniform jumpers which everyone has.

Warm PJs - my dc use fleece onesies at camp.

Also - knife, fork , spoon, plastic plate, bowl and mug

Sparklyfee · 05/09/2018 22:08

Gibble- do you know which one it is? I've looked on sports direct and there are several. The only 25 one I can see is reduced to that price. It's a hibernate 400. Does that sound right?

Thanks everyone. Best get labelling!

Yes, the hibernate 400. It doesn’t pack down tiny but it is warm and comfy and very good value. I have one which is 12 years old and have just replaced some of our older sleeping bags with 2 of these for the kids. DD is NOT a camper and she was warm enough in this overnight when we camped in May.
