Hi, hoping you can give me some advice.
We are going to legoland at the weekend in a couple of weeks. On the Friday, I have booked a hotel in slough. So fairly close to get a early start.
We are thinking of staying somewhere on the Saturday evening and possibly going to the Natural history museum on the Sunday. We will have our car, so looking for advice to where to stay that doesn't take ages to get into London but able to park.

Suggestions would be gratefully received. As are tips on how to get the best out of Legoland. Oh and we are not set on the Natural History Museum. We have 2 dd age 6 and 9. Thanks

i wonder if you have heard of the shrek experience in London? i have never been but it looks fab. would be good for kids that age- but its not educational like the natural history!

That does look fun. I hadn't heard of it before. I think we would want to do a museum either history or science this time.

In which direction to London do you live? Parking in Blackheath and walking through Greenwich Park is a lovely way into London, you could get the boat. But no point if you live north or west of London you're going out of your way then just to park. If you do live south of London then North Greenwich tube station is another good place to park.

Science Museum and Natural History Museum are both brilliant, though likely to be crowded on a weekend

In case you want to be outside after all,

I've never been to HMS Belfast but I gather it's very good for kids, lots of interactive stuff, as is Tower Bridge

Sirzy · 05/09/2018 18:43

Can you not add another night in Slough? Train from there to Paddington. That’s how I always do London!

Magair · 05/09/2018 18:45

We often drive up to the NHM on a Sunday. Get there for opening, it's all free parking around there on a Sunday and we never have trouble getting parked. Science Museum and V and A are all there so plenty to do.

You'll be shattered after Legoland so I would go back to hotel in Slough or Windsor and go straight into London from there in the morning. Can drive straight home from NHM.

AdventuresRUs · 05/09/2018 18:48

Drive in from slough. Free parking sunday o think. Our fav was the science experiment floor in scienve museum but you have to book that!

rose69 · 05/09/2018 18:50

Queues for science museum earlier in the day are shorter and then go to natural history later in the afternoon. Enjoy legoland. There are other posts about how to get the best out of it. You could choose what you want to do in advance and head to those first. Start from furthest end of the park and then walk through village and Star Wars on your way out

Stay in Slough again then drive to one of the tube stations on the picadilly line, one of the Hounslows or Osterley, direct tube to South Ken.

LadyLoveYourWhat · 05/09/2018 19:04

We've stayed in the Premier Inn in Richmond before, easy to drive to from the west, and the right side of London for museums too. They have their own car park, which is quite small, but we managed to get in.

wishingchair1 · 06/09/2018 08:07

Thanks for all the info. I did think about staying in Slough again both thought parking would be a nightmare in the centre. That's really helpful about the free parking. We live in Lincolnshire, so quite a trek back.

We got the train from slough to London for 2 days out in London. It took 20/30 minutes x

KnotsInMay · 06/09/2018 08:11

Good plan, but get there early on Sunday, or there will be no parking and long queues.

When you say get in early, are we talking for 9am or earlier. Is the drive to the science museum fairly short.

Thanks all for the advice. Have booked a second night at Slough.

We will drive into London on Sunday am and hopefully get free parking. Head to science museum first, to the experiment floor. Then if time the history museum.

Any recommendations for lunch spot, or should we just take snacks and keep going.

I think you could do London the same day but def do science and nhm.

They are next door to each other, do science first then later afternoon do nhm its much quieten then. You can park very close to nh.m

Morethanthisprovincallife · 06/09/2018 14:04

Oh didn't read thread but seen your already told to do science first 😂😂.
You'll def get parking always double ☒ though as some are resident some not and alway try side roads if non main parking road.

Morethanthisprovincallife · 06/09/2018 14:04

Also your 10 min walk to harrods, you could finish up on the their toy dept which is really busy..

Morethanthisprovincallife · 06/09/2018 14:05

Don't bother with v and a...

Screaminginsidemeagain · 06/09/2018 14:11

Just to warn you legoland isn’t good. There are multiple threads about bad experiences there.

wishingchair1 · 06/09/2018 14:59

Screaming I went a few years ago and wasn't impressed but dd'd best friend gave us 4 tickets as they could no longer go. Dd's very excited as they haven't been. Not too fussed about the rides, so will take it as it comes.

The London bit is the bit we are excited about. I only dash through with occasional days of work..so Not been to any museums in about 25 years.

Morethanthis do you think we would fit a bus tour in. Would be nice for them to see Big Ben, the palace etc
We have over 4 hr drive back, so don't want to set off really late.

Can anyone recommend a bus tour from the science or history museum? I could Google, but you are all so knowledgeable. Thanks

OP posts:
Morethanthisprovincallife · 06/09/2018 17:07

You could do bus tour yes.... But as a gage... It's a fulsome day it for us doing NHm and science and harrods...

I would have done London Saturday night and done bus tour then and relaxed around the museums the next day.
Another musuem that's brilliant for your next visit is musuem of London. Its varied, hands on in many places, lots of really interesting stuff and it's by St Paul's and tate Britain and the globe. Another fav day out.
