If you’re at home, what happens after school in your home?

I relied on the tv a lot last year for a very tired reception child but I want to change that this year.
Dcs will have a snack when they get home. The older dc will have homework and I’ll cook some dinner.
After dinner, dcs can watch some tv.
I’m not sure how the rest of it will pan out.
What happens at yours?

The dc all do their reading, homework and piano practice while I supervise. Then tea at 5pm. Play in the garden (will do something else in the winter, probably tv to be honest). Then at 6:30 I start doing baths and bed.

I'm getting the "I'm bored" but what do they want?? There's literally 2 hours to get everything done. It's only going to get worse with the dark cold nights. I was thinking I might set aside half an hour to play games with them and have interaction. I know they'd enjoy that. If I put any formal activities in place they'll be too shattered.

I believe it’s called “Fortnite”.Blush

Oh god there is no time or energy for anything other than tv! Ds is knackered and has worked his socks off all day, I am all for ‘proper’ activities at times, but the hour between supper and bath he just needs to slob out on the sofa and chill!

Rockbird · 05/09/2018 15:38

Well currently they're fighting over the toaster, DD2 is crying because DD1 shut her arm in the door and scrunched up her favourite Lego card... We've only been in 2 minutes Hmm

Mine want to go play out with friends then come in for tea about 5(except my two girls on a Monday & Wednesday as have gymnastics) then baths, any homework and reading then they can chill for half hour before bed at 7.30/8 x

Today went ok.
We had a chat about first day of school, then the dcs did some reading and drawing.
Dc1 decided to do some baking. Then they watched some tv after dinner.

2 nights they have band so quick tea then straight out, don't get home till time to start getting ready for supper and bed.2 nights - snack, instrument practice then play outside till tea time. In for tea then screens for an hour or so. Then about an hour reading, relaxing or playing with toys/board games then shower, supper, bed.
1 night - as above till tea time then cubs followed byshower and bed.

Ds walks in eventually, about half an hour later than he should given the distance he has to walk home. DD, age 13, immediately starts in on him about homework, in spite of being told she is a child of the family and NOT a co parent. He gets upset, mainly because she has started on him, partly because her starting on him reminds him that she has been at home with me all day......

I try to get one or other to help me start on tea.

Then, well, their Dad walks in at precisely 5.08pm and we try our best to keep he warring factions apart for the rest of the evening. DD does lots of clubs, DS does not.

Then, when it's bed time, peace breaks out and they insist on sleeping together in one ot the others bed!

Kids raid kitchen for snacks.
Get shouted out for not changing out of uniform first.
Slink off to the TV with the snack haul they've snuck past mummy.
Get shouted at for not changing out of uniform.
Change into pyjamas.
Go back to TV.
Mummy cooks dinner.
Eat.
Then homework/activities like cubs.
Bed.

I work school hours so I'm home after the school run.

DS and I have a chat about his day, he's just started year one so no homework or anything. He'll have a snack. Then he has an hour of screen time while I cook dinner (we eat early.) After dinner we practise his spellings and just play together. He has one club a week on a Thursday (he does swimming too but that's at the weekend). Then bath, story and bed.

gamerwidow · 05/09/2018 19:59

I'm only home for school pick up two days a week but when I'm home we go to the park for a bit or visit my mum or go to the shops.
We usually get in for 430-5 and I do DD (8) dinner and she does her spellings/timetables then goes on her tablet or watches TV.

Rockbird that made me smile as it’s the same in my house 😬
