Help!! Dropped my phone down the toilet this morning and now it won't switch off

....I just smashed the screen on Sunday. Fitted screen saver at 10am (I know, a bit late) and dropped it down the (clean) loo at 10.30am.

Samsung J5 4 months old. Will not switch off, no buttons will respond but the screen will. I've had it in rice. It's now on a radiator. It was in the water for about 3 seconds.

Help me Sad

Nothing you can do but take out the battery and SIM and keep it immersed in a jar of dry rice for a few days. Take it off the radiator: the heat won't help. After that, if it doesn't work you're out of luck, sorry.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:12

OMG

The back doesn't come off, so I can't get to the battery or SIM. I also can't turn it off as the buttons won't function.

OMG

How long did you keep it in the rice?

VelociraptorRex · 05/09/2018 13:15

Don't touch any more buttons! I second the box of dry rice - DP did this last year, it was in a box of dry rice for a week (so he had to suffer without a phone, shouldn't have had it in his back pocket when he sat on the toilet), then try it. It's got to be totally dry though or you'll dry the circuits! Have a look on YouTube - there's videos about how to save them, but it is possible!

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:15

No tlong because I thought warming it up to get the water/damp out of it on the radiator would be better. 20 mins. This not a better idea?

There will definitely be a way to remove the back so that the battery or SIM can be replaced. Google it (on something else). You need to remove them so that every part of the phone can be fully dried. It'll turn off when the battery is out, so don't worry about that!

You will just need to do without it while it lives in rice for a few days. There's no other way if you want it to survive long term.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:17

Ah I've just managed to turn it off. This happens by pressing and holding a button which then gives you touch screen options. therefore a button is working. I've turned it off. Will I leave it off?? Oh sorry crap writing I'm panicking,

No no no no no don't warm it! Heat will damage the electrical components. Phones are already prone to damage from overheating, that's why they have fans built in.

It needs to go in rice, disassembled, for at least 3 days.

gutrotweins · 05/09/2018 13:17

Put it in dry rice.
Worked for ds.

I cannot take it apart. I think.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:21

It's in rice.

It needs to stay in the rice for a minimum of 24 hours! Minimum. It will very slowly draw out the moisture. Heating can cause more damage. Pop it in a container and put it in a warm cupboard for as long as possible. Do not try to use it. The damage is caused by USE in water, not the water itself. When you activate something on the phone, it sends signals through the circuits and water shorts it out and buggers it up.

If you can put it somewhere it doesn't get signal, even better.

Cindersdonegood · 05/09/2018 13:24

Just seen that you've managed to turn it off. Ignore my advice about signal. Nothing will activate when it's off.

Now you need to be patient and use a different phone for a few days if you want to try and save it. Do not be tempted to turn it back on to try it. The power surge will cause damage if it isn't 100% dried out.

brokenshoes · 05/09/2018 13:25

You tube video re how to remove cover.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:26

Thank you so much. Do you think I'd better go back and try to pop out the SIM and memory card.....?

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:28

Mine is a 2017. It has a very much moulded back area with no separate cover.

OP posts:
HildaZelda · 05/09/2018 13:34

Take it apart, put it back in rice and into the airing cupboard. I did the same last year and had to leave it in there for 3 days.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:35

How did you know to leave it for 3 days? Do I need to wait 3 days? Sha

LemonysSnicket · 05/09/2018 13:37

Put it in rice, in the airing cupboard and do not touch it for 48 hours minimum. Even then it may be fucked

PreseaCombatir · 05/09/2018 13:46

I heard the rice thing is a myth, it will dry out after a few days regardless. If you have one of those shops near you that sell/fix phones, they can usually dry them out for you for around £35. It happened to me last week, think they use alcohol or something, takes them about an hour.

Justgivemeasoddingname · 05/09/2018 13:53

Thanks all.

I live 75 miles from shops so that's a no.
I've just gone to take out the SIM and memory card- it's the type of phone where you poke a wee metal thing in the side and a wee holder pops out with the SIM or whatever. I did this and both cards had water on them. However when I pressed the metal thing in on one side, I'd ended up pressing down on the other side which in turn pushed the ON button and it restarted my phone Angry anyway it did restart and I shut it down straight away.

Am I right to think the fact that it did switch on and was able to do so, a good thing? Confused

OP posts:
HildaZelda · 05/09/2018 17:15

I left it for 3 days because I took it out after 2 and it was turning on but I could only see part of the screen. Put it back in again and it was fine on the third day.

PattiStanger · 05/09/2018 17:37

I think turning on may be a bad thing rather than a good thing, you shouldn't try and turn it on until after several days in the rice

PreseaCombatir · 05/09/2018 20:50

here
Use rubbing alcohol yourself? See if you can order some? please see link, rice is a myth, it won’t help.
