Tips for curly hair DD

Would love some advice on how to look after/style my DDs beautiful curly hair. She is 16 months it isn't long enough to get knotty yet.

I have thought of using children's conditioner aswell as shampoo just to maybe make the curls more defined. Do you think this is too soon or will be to heavy for her hair?

I try my best to let it dry naturally and brush more with my fingers. She hates me brushing it anyway and hates/pulls out any hair clips bobbles.

I have naturally curly hair to and hated it when I was younger as it was always just a frizzy mess and just tied up. I now straighten it most days. I don't want my DD to feel that way so any tips/product recommendations will be welcome thanks Smile

Curly girls conditioner washing group on Facebook
Don't brush it even with fingers unless it's wet, and have a look at the group, loads of advice for children

Don’t brush it
Wash it rarely
Use lots of SLS free conditioner

My daughter is the same and I've only washed with conditioner for a few months now, no shampoo. Can't say it's made any difference though really, so I'm following this thread for other ideas. I've also tried some leave in sprays and curl creams but unless I wet her hair and redo several times a day, it still gets frizzy and tangled.

Don’t brush it except when wet

Always shampoo and condition

Use some hair oil to help tame it if need be

Let it dry properly and naturally

cactusplant · 05/09/2018 13:19

Definitely let it dry naturally

Maui shampoo and conditioner is great,it’s worked wonders for my 2 daughters hair. You can get it in boots, costs about £8.50 a bottle but you don’t need to use a lot but lasts ages. I also use the curl cream on their hair but at that age you probably don’t want to be using a lot of product on it.

Try to wash it early enough so it dries before bed.

Watching for tips! I’m fighting a constant battle with my 2 hair

My friend uses the curly girl method on her 3-year-old's hair. I don't really know what the method is but a PP has mentioned it. The little girl's hair is beautiful ringlets all the time.

Liesmyparentstoldme · 05/09/2018 14:06

I'll second the curly girl method. I follow it for mine and my 2 dd's hair.

Don't brush it. Comb through in the bath when washing, whilst her hair has conditioner in.

Use products that are sulphate, silicone etc free. Try washing with a cowash.

At that age you won't want to use a lot of products. But I'd recommend either a leave in conditioner and perhaps an oil. If curly hair is moisturised, it won't frizz very much.

Leave hair to air dry. Towel drying will create frizz.

Also in the mornings to refresh, inbetween washes. Get a spray bottle. Fill it with water. Quick spritz, apply a little bit of leave in conditioner. Leave to dry. Then style

With my son I just used to spray with water every day to comb and neaten up the curls up again, as he got older he stopped letting me near his hair which would end up looking like a birds nest so being a boy I now just have it cut shorter lol when I was younger with my curls I just used to rarely wash it, spray in leave in conditioner sometimes, if needed, and never brush hair hair only comb when wet also have regular.

Thanks everyone some great tips here. Definitely going to try the curl method

I'll post a bit more now I can!
I wash with conditioner only, usually yes to carrots scalp relief or Superdrug extracts. Then condition and leave some in. I apply gel to soaking wet hair and scrunch out the crunch when it's bone dry

This is how it looks. I never ever brush it. Apologies for modelling shot but it's the best recent hair pic I have'

I use Curly Ellie shampoo/conditioner/detangling spray on my very curly 2 year old. Pricy, but worth it. I've never been able to just comb it - it does need a brush not just a comb (only when wet!) But the tangle teezer brush for curly hair does the job no problems

Lizsmum · 05/09/2018 14:26

Wear a satin curl cap in bed, although maybe she won't tolerate this until she's older.

thurmanmerman · 05/09/2018 16:19

Your hair looks amazing @Ollivander84 !

AliceRR · 05/09/2018 16:31

You could get a satin pillow case for her!

Crunchymum · 05/09/2018 16:46

My curly girl is 3 and we just use a kids shampoo and conditioner and a spray detangler (I like the Johnson's one, in green bottle).

I brush morning and evening with detangler and tangle teaser.

This is it at the end of the day. Before the evening brush.

curlywurly4857483 · 05/09/2018 17:44

@Ollivander84 your hair looks fantastic! As does your DDs @Crunchymum .
