Claiming back on debit card

Hi,

Was in town yesterday with my mum and she collected £1000 in Euro's from Waitrose. Somehow from there to this car she managed to drop it and is now distraught as it was her holiday money for the villa and spending. She has been back to all the nearby shops twice but no luck. Some bugger has probably nicked it! Can she claim it back even tho she paid by debit card?? It's such a lot to loose and I'm not financially able to help her 😢

Thanks.

I don’t think there would anything to claim back - the money has been spent, unless it was a card she topped up rather than the actual euros?

Her house insurance might cover it?

If its theft, she needs to report it to the police... with a report you might get somewhere?

Not a chance on the debit card, unless it has an insurance for loss. Even if it was theft (and you don't give any evidence that it is) you wouldn't be covered unless there was an additional insurance.

Contents insurance may cover her if she has cover for cash away from the home, you'd need to check the policy details though, it would be unusual to be covered for loss of cash and for such a high amount.

You can check with the local police station to see if anyone hands it in. It's unlikely but certainly not unheard of.

Unless she left the money at the bureau de change in Waitrose why would you think it would be possible to claim it back on her debit card?

She made the purchase, she took her merchandise away, the transaction was complete.
It’s not Waitrose or the banks fault she was careless with the currency.
Debit cards do not come with insurance for purchases.

I hope the person who finds the money is honest and hands it in but unless she has specific cover for large amounts of cash in the ‘handbag’ cover in her home insurance there is no chance of her getting the money replaced.

I didn't think so but thought I'd ask, police already called and nothing. Someone's having a great time with my mums money 😢
