I am running a quiz (for fundraising) - I need some current affairs questions please?

So far I have:

1)Which Southampton football club player was recently fined £96, 425 for driving offences?

Answer: Mario Lemina – the fine was for failure to disclose who was driving his car rather than the actual speeding offences

2)Which veteran Labour MP recently (August 2018) resigned the whip after claiming that Corbyn’s leadership is “a force for anti Semitism”?
Answer: Frank Field, MP for Birkenhead for the past 40 years. He claimed that Labour was increasingly “seen as a racist party” and that Mr Corbyn has done “nothing substantive” to address the issue
……...

I need some difficult ones to sort out the men (and women) from the boys (and girls)..as well as some more moderate to easy questions

I avoid the news mostly so would appreciate some suggestions. Cheers

Thanks

Pawnee - He didn't resign though. He resigned the whip. It's important to get these things right!

Sorry people but X factor judges and Big brother are not IMHO current affairs.

Fine for a round on reality TV, not for current affairs.

Something people have a chance of guessing

Pic a local town, what was the max temp reached in the last 12 months. You could also do minimum temp.

Matching quotes to political parties / politicians.

Flags is a good one.

Not really current but could be fun - Patron saints.

Eg name three countries with the patron saint St Patrick.

Name political parties with elected MPs that are not conservative, labour or lib dem.

LimitIsUp · 05/09/2018 12:52

Yes true Barbara re Novichok - they were from Aymesbury (although the poisoning occurred whilst they were in Salisbury)

How much were Leave.EU fined for breaking Electoral Law? Nearest guess wins?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 05/09/2018 16:10

Hi Limit
How about the famous faces picture round? Stick a load of pictures of famous people (try some when said person was v young too, makes it a bit tricky) on paper and photocopy? Quite handy as a half time flller to give quiz master a break and can be used to give early birds something to get on with.

National air lines?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 05/09/2018 16:10

Doh ... meant to say aim is to name the face !

MeetOnTheLedge · 05/09/2018 16:20

I'd stay away Brexit entirely, its meant to be a fun night out and for many it's deeply worrying.

LimitIsUp · 06/09/2018 13:05

The other quiz categories that I am doing include:

Geography and the natural world
History
Culture (art, literature, movies)
Sport
Celebrity Trivia
Food and drink

If anyone has some question suggestions for those I would be immensely grateful. I have used a number of the suggestions above for Current Affairs and a picture round

Paparadscha I’m baffled that you think the question about Frank Field is difficult but you think an easier one is when Betty Boothroyd became Speaker?

As the saying goes, a question is difficult when you don’t know the answer to it!

What is the likely age range of the contestants? If they’re young they likely won’t have even heard of Betty Boothroyd, and I certainly wouldn’t describe it as a current affairs question (although I wish it was because I’m old).

For picture rounds you could have copies of adverts with the brand name removed - it can be surprisingly difficult to remember which advert is for which company.

Another one could be to provide sections of various maps with a placename taken out. So maybe showing three local villages, with the name of one missing. You could change the level (as it were) so have a few with street names, and you could also include bus and train maps.

Defrack · 06/09/2018 16:41

I like the advert idea, you could do a logo quiz, pick some logos and they have to say what they're?bit easy tbh, but fun to do and maybe a nice starter activity to ease everyone into it

Petalflowers · 06/09/2018 17:11

Food - can you include a question about Seaweed in Chinese dishes being made from cabbage. (See other thread).,

For Culture, why don’t you have a music round, and do ‘Guess the theme tune’, and either play a selection of well known film theme tune snippets (Jaws, Star Wars, great escape, dam busters, etc) or tv theme tunes (one show, match of the day, Grange Hill, bikers grove, etc)

fussychica · 06/09/2018 17:13

Likely age of participants makes the biggest difference in my opinion. We quiz quite a bit and despite being 60 at many of the venues we are among the youngest! If DS comes with us, despite being excellent at general knowledge he doesn't stand a chance on many of the questions as they are designed for a more mature audience.

Personally, I love a proper varied entertainment round, picture and music rounds. DH loves the geography and history rounds. Neither of us like flora and fauna or food and drink rounds, others seem to agree as a collective sigh usually goes up when they are announcedGrin
Hope it goes well.

NCNCNC123 · 06/09/2018 17:53

Following on from Petal's idea, you could have a food and drinks round all based on "what is the main ingredient in..." (maybe state you're not meaning pasty etc). You could have a mix of food and drinks (cocktails) and throw in some tricks such as the Chinese seaweed and Peking Duck.

DamsonGin · 06/09/2018 18:07

What was the nickname if the boys football team who got stuck in the Thailand caves? (Think it was the Wild Boars but it would be worth checking)

LimitIsUp · 07/09/2018 07:45

I thought that MissFezziwig

Age range of those attending is 40 -70 ish (with most clustered around the mid 40's to 50's)

Thanks for these suggestions folks - they are great and I will be using them. Saves me a lot of work

Keep them coming please Smile

You could do a picture round: match the person to the job. Dead simple ones like the PM and US President. Trickier ones like the Pope and the Governor of the Bank of England, Vice President of the US, and then absolute sods like Secretary of State for Work and Pensions or SecGen of the UN.
As long as you include a few women into the mix and perhaps some people even the people who are clueless can enjoy having a stab at deciding whether a face looks like a banker.

YaelMarielle · 07/09/2018 08:14

I wouldn't include football in a current affairs quizz.

But maybe that's just me being biased... Because I couldn't answer a question like that (not even about our local - and admittedly quite popular - football club!)...

Geography and the natural world

Which continent has no desert? (Ok, that's easy)

Name a double landlocked country? (There are two)

What is the most densely populated (sovereign) country?

History does that in your opinion also include mythology? Always makes for interesting and varied questions imo.

EvilRingahBitch · 07/09/2018 08:14

If people are quite good quizzers then a good literature one is
“who is?
Lady Chatterley’s Lover
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Prisoner of Azkaban/Zenda
Gone Girl
Mockingjay
The Lord of the Rings
Etc
