Birthday cupcakes- do kids eat a mound of buttercream?!

Hi all, it will be my dd’s 6th birthday and the first birthday party I am hosting, she didn’t go to nursery and her 5th birthday was on the first day of reception so we didn’t know anyone, so am a proper party virgin!

I want to do birthday cupcakes, easier to serve etc. All the cupcake recipes I see have a big mound of buttercream, is there any other alternative? WHat is popular for kids cupcakes and tasty too!

You could always just make up half the amount of buttercream in the recipe if it looks like too much.

Small children have a tendency to lick the icing and leave the cake!

We do glace icing (icing sugar and water) plus sprinkles, mine prefer it to buttercream.

Less messy too as it sets if you do them the day before.

Also avoid using any flavourings as there's something a bit sad about seeing a child take a bite out of a delicious looking cake only to get a shock at an unexpected flavour.

I’d do regular water icing. Less faff and less messy for 6 year olds to eat.

We just do more old fashioned cup cakes with smaller sizes and a smear of icing - my kids already get way too much junk between a million parties, family visits and school events!. You can get rice paper cake toppers in different characters etc, or use smarties to decorate, or my niece recently loved her 'butterfly'fairy cakes

Butterfly cakes go down well and have a bit less icing

We just did regular icing, icing sugar with water and vast majority of kids eat that.

When mine were little one just ate the icing, one just the cake so they split all cakes 😎

WhirlwindHugs · 05/09/2018 07:30

Just use half of what the recipe says - even if they could eat that much, lots will only have a few bites of their cake.

CuppaSarah · 05/09/2018 07:33

If you're piping the icing on, start from the centre and swirl outwards. If you get it right it looks like a bit like a flower, plus it's not swirled up stupidly high like the dog poo swirls.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 05/09/2018 07:37

Both my kids just eat the buttercream and hand me the damp cake still in the case.

Newtothis2017 · 05/09/2018 08:05

Mine scrap of the buttercream icing and eat the cupcake

Pastaagain78 · 05/09/2018 08:07

Just to a smear or glacé icing. I hate dog poo swirls and they are really sickly.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 05/09/2018 08:11

Last time I made birthday cupcakes I was tempted to not bother with the cake and just fill the cases with icing.

Sparkletastic · 05/09/2018 08:24

Mine hate buttercream but love glacé or fondant icing.

Rory786 · 05/09/2018 10:04

cigarsofthepharoahs !!

Thank you everyone, I have cupcake toppers of the cocktail stick variety to add colour so I think I will do a water icing.

Why not do fairy cakes instead?

Rory786 · 05/09/2018 21:27

Yes good idea! Thank you.
