Charity shop joy...

Any charity shop fiends here?
You will never guess I got a Calvin Klein women's shirt, as new, fine mauve and blue stripes on white, my size, off the POUND RAIL at a charity shop in my local town today...

Then later I found a little Jorli jacket, OK that was a fiver, its like thick matted cardigan wool, but a jacket, in grey.

Then a pair of brand new black jeans, kind of mum cut, high waist.

I look so smart, and spent £13.

Maybe we should have a charity shop tenner challenge?

Vintage grey silk and wool mix skirt suit by Yves Saint Laurent for Fortnum & Mason for £30....

I can honestly say that I've never been to a charity shop, I was raised to sort of look down on them (wore designer clothes every day sort of child, sad really). I always hear of people finding such amazing things but have absolutely no idea how to shop in one or if there are different types. I'd love to have a browse but to be honest I find them quite daunting

PolkerrisBeach · 06/09/2018 18:38

have absolutely no idea how to shop in one

Hmm

Pick stuff up. Take it to the till. Pay.

PolkerrisBeach

Thanks for the help.

What I actually meant is that I don't know if there are certain ones which are better than others for certain things. How are they set out? Etc

colditz · 06/09/2018 18:45

I found a ppair of church's Brogues for £6.50. Currently wearing those to death. They're so very slightly tight but as they were BRAND NEW AND UNWORN I will forgive them

colditz · 06/09/2018 18:47

Pinkyy

You have to rootle around in them like Jumble sales.

The less posh looking ones are usually better for bargains as they are less likely to have an offical brand list pinned up in the steam room telling them what to stick on ebay.

Have just remembered my as new Gant fur lined lace up boots. Cost me £8 and when I googled them Gant boots start at upwards of £100 Shock

Love a good charity buy, in my town they aren't very good but sometimes find a gem or just what I need. If I'm passing a more classy area with charity shops I will have a good dig about, I do think they price up some things but overall good value for money.

I've seen a dress for £350 in a charity shop Shock.
Didn't buy it but spotted full fur coat for £30 where as in my town they sell for £80, my consciounce doesn't let me buy them though, as lush as they are.

LuckyDiamond · 06/09/2018 19:15

A pencil drawing inside a record sleeve worth around £120 when I bought some vinyl.

FlorencesHunger · 06/09/2018 19:36

Pinkyyy it really isn't that hard, if you have good/fancy areas with charity shops then they would suit you best. They make themselves look all boutique and don't put tat out except overpricing primark stuff.

I would have preferred my dm to root around charity shops to put clothes on my back than hand me downs any day.

You are gaining some quality usually well taken care of clothes(sometimes still with tags) a relatively cheap price which would have otherwise went in the skip if no one bought them and the money goes to a good cause.

almondsareforevermore · 06/09/2018 19:42

My nearest big town is one of those affluent places where charity shop prices are high. I bought a smocked baby dress in Liberty lawn for £15 and a pair of unworn Clark’s boots for £12.50. My Joules waterproof jacket was £10. I rarely buy anything new.

FlorencesHunger · 06/09/2018 19:57

My best bargain ever is a full length solid wood framed mirror about 5ft 6/7 tall and 3ft wide for a tenner. I couldn't even carry it, I grabbed a passerby I knew and got him to carry it to a relatives house nearby until I could get it to mine by car. I will never let it go.

Pinkyyy · 06/09/2018 21:54

I think I'm going to take the plunge tomorrow and see what all the fuss is about, I really feel as though I'm missing out. Thank you for the advice

Moominfan · 07/09/2018 19:47

You have to be committed pinky, visit a few stores, you'll soon siphon our the good ones. Never go looking for anything especially, guarantee you'll never find it.

TeaAddict235 · 07/09/2018 20:06

How did it go @Pinkyyy ? Any treasures found?

My tip would be to : go alone. You can dawdle and mooch at your own speed. Sometimes chatting makes me miss something or deliberate over a purchase.

Thank you both for the advice, that's how I tend to shop anyway, I much prefer shopping alone and slowly trapsing around (even though it annoys me when other people do this haha). Sadly didn't get chance to go today but will definitely fit it in over the weekend!

Told this story before, but picked up a pretty scarf when I was a teen. Wore it as a belt and ended up having to cut it off when the knot was too tight to undo.

It was Liberty.

(Didn't know at the time, only later on)

Charity shop near me sells adult dresses for £1.99, trousers/skirts 99p, knitwear £1.99, no matter the brand but always gray condition, kids items are 4 for £1,99. I bought a Zara coat, Topshop and a river island leather jacket for £1.99 each. Items with tags are priced individually, maximum bring £6.99. Also my local oxfam is very cheap, the one in Leeds is very expensive

sadeyedladyofthelowlands63 · 09/09/2018 10:37

My go-to dress for weddings and "occasions" is a Monsoon dress, with tags, that I got for £7.99 in the local Mind shop. It's beautiful.

onitlikeacarbonnet · 09/09/2018 12:09

I’ve had a lot over the last couple of years.
I’ve been trying to decide what to do with 2 scarves I got from the Sally Army for £1.99 each about 6 months ago. They’re in a bag in my wardrobe. I picked them up in a rush. I knew from the feel they were silk but I didn’t check them over properly. Didn’t see the labels till later that day.
A pure fine silk Burberry which I love but I’d be stressing every time I wore it in case I snagged it; and a brand new but vintage Hermès with a god awful but classic print.
Think the Burberry I saw on eBay for £150 but the Hermès is more difficult to price.
Saw the same design on the US eBay site for $400 (but not a sold price).
Any takers? Grin

canteatcustard · 09/09/2018 17:52

picked up some toys for my niece and grabbed a bag to put them in. Bag cost £2.
got it home, looked at it, checked online, and yes its a Gucci.

keep meaning to put it on ebay at some point. its worth about £60 ish I think.

kaytee87 · 09/09/2018 17:54

My mil picked up a Barbour jacket for my DH for £10. It looked brand new and had obviously been put into the shop due to a greasy stain on the front that my mil managed to get out. It was still for sale in the shops at the time.
