Where would you go on holiday abroad in late September?

So we were going to do a more adventurous holiday for two weeks but with nothing booked yet and a lot else going on at the moment, we've decided to do something a bit simpler and more relaxing in the sun!

Requirements are: Near a coast with a beach, warm enough to be on said beach!, not a massive tourist resort, area of cultural interest and things to do, not a city break, somewhere we can go walking/cycling/exploring, nowhere that would require a car to get around. Just me and DP, no DCs. It would be great to stay 4 nights in one town then visit a different area and stay there for 4 nights etc - don't need to be in the same place for the whole two weeks. Just somewhere where it's reasonably easy to travel between them without having to hire a car!

So far we've thought of Cyprus, Sardinia, Sicily, Algarve. Ideally not Greece as we've already been there a fair bit the last few holidays. Direct and easy flights would be good.

Has anyone been to any of these places late September time and would recommend? Or been anywhere else that fits these criteria?

Thank you!! Smile

Looking for the same sort of holiday and decided on Malta. Never been so cannot recommend it but it may be worth looking into!

ISeeTheLight · 04/09/2018 18:41

Mallorca. North East coast. It's lovely and not that touristy especially in September.

Dowser · 04/09/2018 18:41

Where I’m going
Tenerife 👍

ISeeTheLight · 04/09/2018 18:43

Also in Mallorca could do one week North East coast and one week Sierra de tramuntana (west coast). It's very good for cycling and walking.

Dowser · 04/09/2018 18:43

You can always choose a quieter resort
Or go to the other side of the island puerto de la Cruz
Bus transport is good and you can buy a bono ticket that makes travelling much cheaper

Would you consider Croatia? I've been a couple of times in Sept and it was nice and hot. We started on the mainland then island hopped - it was very easy to get around by ferry and there was a nice mix of busy (e.g. Dubrovnik) and more laid back islands. Beaches are mostly small and rocky though.

TroysMammy · 04/09/2018 18:46

Fuerteventura.

Pinkandproud · 04/09/2018 18:47

I've been to Croatia in September actually - and would thoroughly recommend it if I hadn't! It's fantastic and it's exactly the kind of holiday I'm trying to replicate! The water was beautiful

Also in these places - have people found that restaurants etc are still open late September time? We're likely to go around 19th September - 3rd October.

We went to Protaras in Cyprus end of September. Weather was beautiful. Lots of history and nearby towns with tours you could book

NynaeveSedai · 04/09/2018 18:52

Morocco. West coast - essaouaira. Just lovely, cheap to get to, great weather, seafood is amazing and fresh (I'm told, I don't eat it but it looked good!) watersports, excursions into the countryside and mountains really easy

BeachyUmbrella · 04/09/2018 18:52

Seville and Tarifa?

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 04/09/2018 18:53

Barcelona plus somewhere coastal?

Pinkandproud · 04/09/2018 18:54

Morocco - I don't eat seafood either! I have been vaguely looking at Morocco though..

How easy is it to travel around Cyprus without a car?

ISeeTheLight · 04/09/2018 19:19

Essaouira is really nice. Much preferred it to Marrakech. Re Mallorca yes everything is open late September early October. Just much quieter than during the summer.

juneau · 04/09/2018 19:22

Not easy to travel around Cyprus without a car, but driving is easy and roads are good. There are lots of lovely places up in the mountains too, which are well worth visiting, but you'd need a car. Is there any reason you don't want to drive?

If you're adamant that driving is a no-no then I wouldn't go to Cyprus, I'd go to Mallorca or Ibiza or mainland Spain.

ISeeTheLight · 04/09/2018 19:47

I also wouldn't go cycling around Morocco, you can do it without a car if you get an excursion guide who does the driving. The roads are mental.

Pinkandproud · 04/09/2018 19:48

I’m just not a very confident driver and haven’t really driven for the last 5 years! Don’t feel I’d be particularly competent on foreign roads.....

Cyprus is the same side of the road as us

ForalltheSaints · 04/09/2018 20:04

Antibes or Cannes? Assuming you can get a central hotel.

BeachyUmbrella · 05/09/2018 15:27

Look at Fleewinter for Morocco.... I went in June for a mix of city, hiking and beach and they were good and really reasonable..

BarbaraofSevillle · 05/09/2018 15:31

Everywhere is likely to be open at that time. We always go to Canaries, Balerics, Malta, Gozo or Costa del Sol around then and it's quite a busy time. I think the Greek Islands are uniquely seasonal.

You could fly to Malta and spend a few days in Valetta, few days exploring the rest of Malta and a few days on Gozo.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 05/09/2018 15:40

Lanzarote. Flat promenades that go from town to town along the coasts which are ideal for walking and cycling as no cars allowed. Lovely beaches, lots of art culture, will be fairly hot that time of year. Great food . Cheap.
