Baby shark ... am I alone in having known that song for years?

We used to sing it in girl guides in 1999 so twenty ish years ago ... or a variation of it, but its very, very close. I wish I could remember the exact words now but the mummy/baby/grandpa shark and arm actions are exactly the same ... something about going for a swim and 'there were sharks... a mummy shark ... a daddy/baby/grandpa..'

Is that familiar to anyone else (probably others from girlguiding/scouts!!)? I'm beginning to think I'm the only one who doesn't see it as a new song at all... I'm aware its a children's song btw, its just stuck in my head and annoying me!

I first heard it about 5 years ago at a church holiday club my DC's went to.

DMCWelshCakes · 03/09/2018 23:19

I sang it on university choir coach trips in the late 90s. Definitely not a new song.

Interesting! I don't remember it from Guides and I left in 1996...

I'm glad I'm not alone - genuinely can't understand the fuss as I keep thinking, but that's been a song for at least 20 years!

Googled and found a couple of American YT videos of the one we sang (maybe where it came from, I think one of the county leaders had maybe visited as we had quite the international songbook!)

It goes 'was hot day (dodododo), went for a drive (mime driving) ... went to a beach.. went for a swim' (mime swimming), do do do do, swam front crawl/backcrawl (do do do do), swam some more, but there were sharks... a mummy shark (daddy, baby, granpa) ... we swam away and swam some more and even more, but there were sharks.... they took a leg/arm/head , and I was dead... and there were sharks...

I think one would shout and you'd reply with the actions iyswim. For some reason it was the one song I remember everyone begging to sing.

Or some approximation. Its the 'mummy/daddy/baby/granpa' that I remember with exact same action and changing pitch etc...

Obviously these new sharks aren't quite so hungry... shame as I would say the version I know's much better!

I remember hearing this song when I was in year 7/8 (so September 2006-summer 2008). I think it’s just this version/video that’s brought it back into the public consciousness. I remember the version I heard included a lot of repetition, so “mummy shark do do do, mummy shark do do da do do do” etc.

voxnihili · 04/09/2018 04:54

I’ve known it from Guides - I was a guide from 1994 onwards. Am a leader now and we still sing it.

QueenofLouisiana · 04/09/2018 05:48

We sang it a lot this summer with my Beaver Scouts, albeit with a different tune.

QueenOfCatan · 04/09/2018 05:56

We sung the version you've just posted either at guides or if was one of the songs we sung when I worked at place years after that, though I never remembered it until you posted!

QueenOfCatan · 04/09/2018 05:57

Pgl, not place!

stargirl1701 · 04/09/2018 06:12

Yes, I was singing it more than two decades ago with Brownies here in the U.K. and Girl Scouts in the US.

Freetodowhatiwant · 04/09/2018 06:13

I’m familiar with it from YouTube videos my 3 year old likes and it’s part of a “best loved nursery rhymes’ or something like that so yes it would appear it’s not a new one.

CherryPavlova · 04/09/2018 06:19

We sang it with groups of children at summer camps through late 80s and early 90s.

newcupcake · 04/09/2018 06:26

I was singing it at youth club 1995 onwards

CoreyTaylorsMask · 04/09/2018 06:48

I remember singing it in Guides during the 90s too.

gigglingHyena · 04/09/2018 08:33

I know the longer one, have been singing it at camps for a good 20 years or so.

Kids know both having learnt baby alarm at school. Eldest is 14 CSO even that is quite a while ago now.

amusedbush · 04/09/2018 08:57

I was in Rainbows/Brownies 1995 - 1999ish and I don't remember it at all!

happypotamus · 04/09/2018 09:34

Yes, I was a guide in the 90s, and sung that version above. I had also wondered about the current Baby Shark hype and how it was different to the song I have been singing for over 20 years. Thought it was just me!
