Hi,

My DD is starting reception and we can't decide if pinafores, skirts or trousers will be best? Thanks.

We don't have a choice at our school as there's a regulation school skirt and that's our lot! But the skirts have elasticated waists and they're probably easier than pinafores or trousers for PE and swimming changes.

Trousers are best for P.E. days, especially in winter because most kids will struggle to get tights on and off. Skirt/pinafore fine for non changing days.

Pinafores mean that the polo shirt or shirt are somewhat protected- useful if they have expensive logo shirts. Also reduces the washing. Skirts or trousers are more useful on PE days as they are easier to put on and off. Most girls tend to wear skirts (or Pinafores) but will probably vary from school to school. Hope she has fun!

from an office staff perspective I like trousers for winter- a lot of the children seem to get wet feet and its easier changing socks than tights.

can you get one of each? You'll need the same top for each of them and she can then see which she finds best

AveABanana · 03/09/2018 19:59

Pinafore as they only have to do top two buttons of shirt up.
Once it gets into tights weather if you have the option of trousers go for it.

My DD has started P1 in Scotland. I use pinafores on non change days ( we wear with shirt and tie) and polo shirt with elasticed waist skirt for PE days and I am putting cycling shorts underneath on those days too.

I have also put a change of elescticated skirt, pants and socks in her bag in case of an accident. She might need help undoing the pinafore but she would then be able to change herself.

NotPennysBoat · 03/09/2018 20:10

If pinafore is dark colour, it will hide stains better than tshirt/blouse! Also better for skinny kids who have to constantly hitch up skirts/trousers!

cariadlet · 03/09/2018 20:30

I think that pinafores look lovely but I've taught Foundation and year 1, and most girls struggle to get them on and off independently so avoid them for PE days.

As a mum I loved it when my DD decided that she wanted to start wearing trousers in winter because they were more hard-wearing than tights. It seemed like I was buying new tights every couple of weeks because every time she fell over there would be a hole in the knee.

Witchend · 03/09/2018 20:30

Pinafores were considered by far the easiest by my girls.
But also they always started back in September in summer dresses.

randomsabreuse · 03/09/2018 20:35

I went for a pinafore for my DD for preschool because it will stay up while there is zero hope of an age 3-4 pair of trousers staying up as she's only just coming into slimmer cut 2-3. Tights might well be more problematic but will have to wait and see!

SoyDora · 03/09/2018 20:38

Mine has just started reception and she has some of each! First PE lesson today and she managed fine changing in and out of her skirt/polo shirt/cardigan. I’ve got a couple of pinafores and some trousers for the winter too.

formerbabe · 03/09/2018 20:47

When my DD was in reception I got her jersey school trousers...they are basically like a cross between leggings and actual formal school trousers...no zips, buttons or any fastenings at all. Very easy for getting changed for pe. Skirts and dresses are fine but I preferred the trousers because she would have worn tights with skirts and dresses and tights are a total faff imo.

Atthebottomofthesea · 03/09/2018 21:20

Well if your dd is anything like mine then they will refuse to wear trousers (after insisting on trousers all through nursery), will only wear a pinafore or summer dress that meets her exact requirements and will fight against wearing a skirt.

She gets there - I should be grateful for that I guess.

Liz38 · 03/09/2018 21:24

Depends what shape she is. My DD is very tall and thin so anything that is attached at the waist tends to slide down, even with an adjustable waistband. So dresses work best for her as they stay on! Some kids permanently have trouser bottoms trailing in the muck and that's not great... I'd decide based on what fits her best and what she likes.
