Secondary school stationary?

pollysproggle · 03/09/2018 14:57

DS starts secondary school on Wednesday, I'm about to hit the shops to get him a pencil case and stationary.

There's so much in the shops and the school hasn't provided a list.

What does he really need to start the year?

BiddyPop I think you may have gone overboard with the whole colour coordinating folders, etc. Dd uses her folders for a few days and then just stuffs things in her bag willy nilly!

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 15:48

What are hardback copies btw?

LoniceraJaponica · 03/09/2018 15:49

When DD was in year 7 they didn't have folders, just exercise books.

It does vary from school to school. Someone said no need for glue or colour pencils, whereas that is on the essential items list for dc's school. They use glue to stick papers in their exercise books all the time

bettyboo40 · 03/09/2018 16:31

Secondary teacher here. I also think it's very useful for students to have their own glue, highlighters and coloured pencils. I my school they peer assess in green pen so a green biro might be useful too. Obviously other stationery such as pens, pencils, ruler etc.

bettyboo40 · 03/09/2018 16:31

*in not I!

pollysproggle · 03/09/2018 17:20

Thank you all! Very helpful.

I managed to get most of the things suggested, lots of multipacks as DS will definitely lose everything after a week.

The only thing I struggled to buy was a pencil case that wasn't fluffy, sparkly, glittery, diamanté or unicorn style!
I'll look online for something a bit plainer I think!

No need for glue, colouring pencils, and teachers hate tippex!
At our school, we ask that students have glue because the school can't afford to buy good-quality glue (though I buy Pritt sticks for my classroom).
Most teachers set covering books in sticky-back plastic as the first homework.
One of the maths teachers only uses set squares for one lesson - as a proof of Pythagoras' theorem at the beginning of the GCSE course. The rest of the maths department doesn't use them at all.
It is much easier if students have their own colouring pencils and highlighters.
Our science department asks that students have sellotape to stick worksheets into books in the margins, because it uses up much less space than sticking worksheets on empty pages and we can't afford to keep replacing books at that rate.

AveABanana · 03/09/2018 19:04

Don't forget sticky backed plastic for covering books!

Saltycinnamon · 03/09/2018 19:07

5 million black biros please!!

cloudtree · 03/09/2018 19:08

No sticky backed plastic required at our school. I would wait before buying that.

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 19:11

We don't cover jotters either so no sticky backed plastic needed here either

superram · 03/09/2018 19:11

Glue, glue and more glue. Books last better with sticky back plastic. Pen, pencil, coloured pencils (even if just a few).

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 19:12

We've never required glue either

rainingcatsanddog · 03/09/2018 19:15

At the beginning there was a lot of homework on the lines of "make a poster and stick it in your book" "print out some images off the Internet about X" hence the glue

HighwayDragon1 · 03/09/2018 19:25

YES to glue, please! It's expensive and goes missing, kids leave the kids off and pick at it (yes this is secondary) we don't budget for it and several departments won't be buying it this year.

pollysproggle · 03/09/2018 19:34

Ugh that's another thing we don't have at home- a printer.
No actual computer set up anywhere just a laptop, on the odd occasion I need something printed I do it at work.

Will we need one for secondary?

OP posts:
MongerTruffle · 03/09/2018 19:37

It depends on the school, but it's much easier to have your own at home.
Inkjet printers can be bought very cheaply (e.g. this HP colour printer for £24).

dementedpixie · 03/09/2018 19:39

We use the printer on occasion for school stuff. If you get a Bluetooth/WiFi one you can print from phones/ tablets/ laptops

anotherangel2 · 03/09/2018 19:41

Another teacher. Tippeex is banned in most schools. A million spares for when the lose everything.

twinkw · 03/09/2018 19:48

Just been into our local Sainsbury’s & they’d reduced all the ‘back to school’ stationery. This lot cost me @ tenner.
