Do you work in a prison? Question re: attitudes to sex offenders

I was just watching an epsiode of Forensic Files and the rapist killed himself before being apprehended and left a note saying he knew that he would be very vulnerable in prison due to his sex crimes and couldn't face that danger. The case was from the mid 90s.

This also reminded me of another FF case I saw last year where a female prison officer was raped and murdered by a general population prisoner and other prisoners tried to help him cover it up.

With the advent of the internet, and research showing ever more violent porn is searched for, I wondered if the attitude was still the same from non sex crime criminals towards those that commit sex crimes?

It is widely reported about mobile phones being smuggled into prison so are prisoners able to access the internet using these phones? Are they able to watch pornography inside? If yes, has this changed the environment between the prisoners themselves?

I've experienced men becoming more verbally sexually inappropriate/aggressive when in groups just in everyday life so is this mirrored within prisons?

I know NAMALT.

I'm really interested to hear about the experiences of officers in prisons around these issues and would be grateful if anyone could share their experiences.

I work in criminal justice rather than a prison, but yes, sex offenders are definitely at risk from the general prison population, particularly those who offend against children. There’s a pecking order, and sex offenders are at the bottom. Many men in custody will have been the victim of abuse during their childhoods and will have very strong opinions on those who behave that way, I suspect there’s also a degree of feeling better about their own criminal behaviour, as at least they can feel morally superior to the sex offenders. In my area, they tend to be kept in a separate protection wing of prisons, so don’t have contact with the general population, for their own safety.

I don’t know about pornography in the prisons, hopefully a guard will be along to answer.

There are hundreds of episodes on Netflix, I've watched them all Grin

Thanks for tthe replies.

Yes, FF was on Netflix at my friend's house. And I can confirm that there are hundreds of episodes.

I can only watch a few at a time as it makes me so damn angry. There is the odd episode where the perpetrator of the crime is a woman but the majority are sexual crimes carried out by men.

I used to work in a prison and can confirm that there is most definitely a pecking order. Those in on child abuse charges were almost always kept on special wing for their own protection along with ex coppers and after 7/7 muslims. I cant comment about mobile phones because I left before they became as prevalent as they are today.

My DS used to work in a prison and was actually thinking of applying for a job working with the sex offenders - in the prison he was thinking of moving to they were in a separate wing away from the other prisoners.

After talking to other people who had worked in the wing he was told that people often don't stay in the job all that long because sex offenders are so horrible to work with they are extremely manipulative and destructive individuals and they don't really believe they have done anything wrong. Complete and utter lack of feeling for other people and the harm they have caused. Working with them is pretty unpleasant so many people only stay a year or two.

I think the majority of phones inside prisons are very small, they're not androids they're just basic very small phones to make calls so no prisoners are not sat watching porn on their phones. The penalty for being caught with a phone can be very severe and they can add time to your sentence so they have to be very careful even when trying to charge the phone. Prisons even have a chair called the boss which inmates have to sit on and it will detect if there is a phone up their bum 😁

Some prisons are run by G4S now not the government and they are run differently , those G4S ones are not as bothered re mobile phones therefore loads will be found and it is easier for criminals to carry on with their criminal activity whilst inside. The sex offenders rarely show remorse unfortunately.
