best tea bags. Irish?

Right,this is boring sorry.
Currently drink Yorkshire and have tried Typhoon and Tetly and some others.
I've been recommended Irish tea, the only ones around here are Thompson's and Barrys both of which we've tried and they've been quite bland. We like quite strong tea.
What ARE the best teabags?

I'm destined to drink bland tea forever

Clipper organic. Pricy but well worth it as a small luxury.

Peridot1 · 03/09/2018 13:36

Im Irish and used to import teabags into the uk when I would go home. But I have to say I’m happy now with Yorkshire. Although I do enjoy tea from M&S cafes so keep meaning to try their tea. I haven’t been overly keen on Barry’s last time I bought some back. Lyons is good. Have never had Thompson’s.

I'm Irish and like Lyons Green label. Barry's is popular in the south of the country as it originated in Cork.

I'm Irish, and don't tell anyone, but my favourite tea is Yorkshire Gold.

Can't be beat.

SmilingButClueless · 03/09/2018 13:59

Have you tried Twinings English Strong Breakfast Tea? I’m not really a tea drinker but I know a few people who really like that one - apparently it’s much better than their normal strength English Breakfast Tea.

ThanksItHasPockets · 03/09/2018 14:00

Twinings do an ‘extra strong’ English Breakfast tea.

smurfy2015 · 03/09/2018 16:01

Here is a link with the Irish tea brands on it www.teadog.com/Irish-Tea-s/114.htm

I'm, not a tea drinker really, but top recommendation is
Lyons gold blend
Barry's tea
Punjana
Nambarrie
Bewleys

in that order

reddressblueshoes · 03/09/2018 16:09

What's your water like? I used to bring over Barry's gold blend but when I lived in a hard water area in London it just didn't taste great. My favourite was Sainsbury's fair trade taste the difference Kenyan tea. Clipper isn't fragrant enough.

Now I'm back in a soft water area, I can have the gold blend, or Lyons, but I've also tried black label etc. I'd do a taste test, or maybe try some of your usual tea through a water filter.

nothingchangesagain · 04/09/2018 21:03

I'm in a soft water area. I'll try the lyons and twinnings

Sainsbury's Red Label. I got pissed off with Twinings constant price increases, so changed to this. Nothing compares to the Jackson's Orange Pekoe, but Twinings killed that when they bought out Jacksons.

DramaAlpaca · 04/09/2018 22:47

Lyons, the ones in the green box.

Flyingpompom · 04/09/2018 23:16

PG pyramids!

honeyrider · 04/09/2018 23:33

Lyons Gold Blend is my favourite tea.

AttackoftheSlimolds · 04/09/2018 23:34

Lyons isn’t really Irish - it’s made in a PG Tips factory outside Manchester.

Barry’s all the way!

Deadringer · 04/09/2018 23:41

Lyons used to be Irish, still my favourite anyway.

fridaseyebrows · 04/09/2018 23:51

Barry’s gold blend! My mum always brings some with her when she comes to visit - even though she knows I can get them in Sainsbury’s. Can’t talk the risk of being without! Yorkshire is acceptable in her book also.

Absolute best though (and only for v special occasions!) is fortnum and mason Irish breakfast tea. Def for lovers of the v strong stuff!

Miscella · 05/09/2018 00:10

Punjana is the first choice in this house.

elonmusk · 05/09/2018 07:13

I've moved from Barry's teabags to their loose leaf because you can't compost the bags. The loose leaf is really tasty and cheaper because you don't use as much.

MM18 · 05/09/2018 07:42

All ‘strong’ tea has a hefty dose of Assam and Ceylon tea leaves, which have more tannins. They’re expensive which is why they’re not used in quantity, but you can buy a separate box of them and add a teaspoon to your mug with any old brand of teabag. Just use a mug strainer. Teapots best, obviously.

VickieCherry · 05/09/2018 07:47

Yorkshire Gold. But I don't like strong tea.

FlaviaAlbia · 05/09/2018 07:56

Punjana, I think it's also branded as Thompson's tea outside NI.

nothingchangesagain · 05/09/2018 18:54

I have tried Thompson's but can't remeber if it was the red or the green.
so basically is Irish tea not stronger than English tea? or it just depends on what brand or type you buy either way?
