From next week I will be looking after my one year old dgs one day a week (he is at a childminder two days) and was wondering what sort of activies you would suggest I do with him. As I have a bus pass we will be going on bus journeys some days.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Local playgroups, library trip, swimming trips, park, baking, crafts if you can bear it.

Ask your local schools and children’s centres if they have a stay & play session on the day you’ll be having him. They’re great for socialising (you and him!) and having a bit of structure in the day.

Get a balance bike and take him to the park.

Get a waterproof suit (Togz do great ones) and wellingtons for him so he can be out in all weathers.

local kids shows are always fun. what area are you in? it may be worth checking out your local theatre.

stay and play sessions

soft play

crafts (egg carton caterpillars, and you can get craft kits from ebay or the works)

the park (feeding the ducks is something most kids enjoy!)

if you have a garden or live near a green space, you could get some garden toys (skittles, maybe a second hand scooter? )

kids actually love going on the bus, so (this may sound strange- DC's grandparents did this with them and it was a hit) buy around bus ticket, bring snacks and sit at the front of the bus. go round in a loop, and he can use these printable sheets that i will link below to spot things. sounds simple but they love it.

good luck!

It's all about the process not the goal.

Make pastry, he can play with it.

Fill the sink, stand behind him, lots of plastic cups etc and let him pour and splash. If it's hot he can bathe in it.

Stories stories stories - library often but mainly reading.

Nursery rhymes - if you don't remember them, i recommend the Usborne book. Sing through the whole book with all the actions.

Thanks for all the ideas - very helpful. I am really looking forward to having him as he is a lovely little boy - I am not biased - and I am sure Dh and I are going to love looking after him.

My ds would be happy sitting on a bus all day tbh!!

Libraries often do free Rhyme Time sessions. DS absolutely loves them!
