Baby gate question

TillyVonMilly · 03/09/2018 09:10

I need a baby gate for our stairs but I know nothing about them. The problem is that our staircase turns 90 degrees from the bottom, the first few steps are wedge shaped, has a window and the finial post isn’t on the hall floor but on the second step meaning it’s not possible to put a gate from there as the window is opposite the post. Not sure that I’ve explained the layout that well but are there any gates for odd shaped stairs? Thanks Smile

We have a similar problem. We ended up using half a playpen and cable tied it to anything we could! Have done that for 3 children now, works fine Smile

The playpen was one that comes in six segments. Just use as many as you need.

Our steps are awkward. We got a retractable stair gate. I’ll try and find a picture

We have awkward stairs too. At the bottom we have a retractable fabric gate such can be closed at a bit of an angle. It’s cable tied to the end of the banister on one side. At the top we have a 6 part fence and gate thing that just partitions off the whole area around the top of the stairs.

The babydan folding gate might work for you, we had a funny spot at the top of our stairs and it's gone perfectly at an angle there but we needed to buy an extension piece for it as well.

I never had one on the stairs. One on the bedroom door and then one across the livingroom. That ment they could play in their rooms and safely in the lounge and the kitchen, bathroom and stairs were supervision only areas.

Same as Sceaming, we couldn't fit gates on the stairs, so had one on bedroom and one on living room (that kept DCs out of kitchen, away from back door etc too).

Thanks everyone for your suggestions Smile
I’m going to have a look at the retractable one and see if that will work. It’s only going up the stairs from the hallway I need to block off. It’s been a pain trying to find something suitable, with the steps being wedge shape and the side having spindles instead of a solid wall, we currently have a large box there, it doesn’t look pretty but it works.

I think your stairs sound like the ones my parents had...

They left the bottom step as it was and attached the baby gate to the posts where they started on the second step.

Hopefully that makes sense!

TillyVonMilly · 03/09/2018 16:41

Yes it makes sense thanks Steph Ive measured the height and had a look at a couple online but as there is a window facing the straight part of the stairs a gate would need to fit below the sill. The post is between the second and third step but would need it sit on the third to give it support from the post which would then leave a gap underneath Hmm only other options would be to fit one where the stairs straighten out although I think that could be a bit iffy coming down the stairs for us, having open it
