Retailers not doing gift cards - missing a trick?

Nearly posted this as my first AIBU but didn’t have the nerve...

Anyhow, I’m getting my nephew some vouchers / gift cards as a fun and practical present on starting university.

Turns out Just Eat and Deliveroo don’t do vouchers / gift cards at all!

Nando’s do but you have to purchase them at the restaurant. And similarly with Sainsbury’s- though apparently not all Sainsbury’s stock them.

Just found this quite curious- particularly with Just Eat and Deliveroo they really seem to be missing a trick.

I don't know i hate vouchers. I'd rather just give someone money so they can choose what they want rather than restrict them to one place.

ismellsnow · 03/09/2018 07:42

Re Nandos, I'm fairly sure Tesco stock these (and other restaurants like Pizza Express etc.)

Nando’s vouchers are absolutely sold in supermarkets, I bought one from Morrison’s last week

Didn't look very hard......

I can't see many people giving Sainsbury's gift cards. Those examples probably found it wasn't worth it.

Still, they're a pain and increasingly I find them annoying as presents.
It's both a lazy and controlling option. As in: I can't be arsed to think of a specific present but you have to shop here.

Buy specific things or just give cash.

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 03/09/2018 07:45

Just eat also do them...

Thank you so much for the update on Just Eat - when I last contacted them they said they didn’t do them

But JustEat and Deliveroo are delivery services of food from all sorts of restaurants aren’t they? I can see how vouchers would be difficult to administer.

You realise supermarket vouchers will probably get spent on booze? Wink. If you do get supermarket vouchers, check that there is a branch in his uni town. Nothing more frustrating than vouchers you can’t spend. (Eg Big Tesco and Waitrose don’t exist where I live).

BikeRunSki · 03/09/2018 07:49

I stand corrected on JustEat.

Aridane · 03/09/2018 07:51

I don’t think a Nando’s gift card is ‘controlling ‘ when it is my nephew’s favourite place to ear !

Sainsbury’s will be the nearest supermarket- sister suggested this

Sainsbury’s do a two-part gift card called a ‘meal ticket’. Recipient gets one card and you keep the other. When you top up the balance appears on the recipient’s card to spend. Might be nice to top up periodically for birthday, house-share Christmas meal, end of exams etc.
