Any tattoo experts around?

Dd hD a tattoo 5 days ago and took the sticky plastic film off in the shower this morning. There’s a lot of sticky residue left which is sticking to her clothes and getting covered in fluff. She’s in a flap about it- even though it looks as if it’s healing fine, and is rejecting all my suggestions about how to get the stickiness off. I’ve suggested baby oil, eye make up remover and make up removing wipes. Does anyone know what she could use? Before I kill her for being a diva?

Should it have been left on as long as that? I took the cover off mine within a few hours and then put bepanthen cream on it a few times a day afterwards

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 22:45

She was definitely told to take it off on the 5th day- she’s got a cares information sheet thing. She did the same with her other one, and the film came off with no stickiness left.

Is there a reason she has kept it covered so long?

I have both forearms done and DH has sleeves, we were both told to uncover, wash and apply ointment (bepanthen here) within hours to begin healing and drying out.

Anyway, as she's left it so long it could be the secretions from the wound causing it to be sticky (like when you get a scab that you haven't let dry out) so I'd suggest keeping it uncovered whenever possible, just wash with a little lukewarm water, pat dry and apply ointment a few times a day. It will probably dry up soon.

That's a long time to leave the cling film on. It needs to be cleaned with warm water only and given plenty fresh air. Bepanthen is no longer recommended since the recipe was changed a while ago.

If she is worried she needs to speak to a tattoo artist, but maybe not the one who til her to leave the cling film on for so long.

Kidssendingmenuts · 02/09/2018 22:47

You've left the plastic film on 5 days too long!! Your meant to go home, wash the tattoo until the plasma stops coming out, pay dry and apply bepanthen or other cream. The air needs to get to the tattoo in order for it to heal.
She needs to speak to the tattoo place who did it and ask for suggestions as putting random stuff on it 1. Going to sting and 2. May ruin the tattoo.

YerAuntFanny · 02/09/2018 22:47

Oops, x-post.

FlamingoLass · 02/09/2018 22:49

Whilst there’s always debate about whether film
Should be left on overnight or taken off when you get home... 5 days is way too long! It needed cleaned a looooong time ago and leaving it like that can lead to infections.

Unscented soap. Body temp shower. Pat dry. Apply coconut oil.

sirmione16 · 02/09/2018 22:49

I've a few, and bepanthen isn't the advise anymore. I was advised to use pure coconut oil instead and it's worked amazingly - I actually use it on my skin generally now too Grin keep it clean, leave it open to air - no tight clothing or anything on it and keep it moisturised with a tattoo specific cream or coconut oil :) it's only £4 from supermarket. In Tesco it's with olive oils and such

sirmione16 · 02/09/2018 22:50

@FlamingoLass didn't mean to cross post you there! Same advice :)

FlamingoLass · 02/09/2018 22:51

Yeah I remember being told to use bep a long time ago .... my latest was coconut oil and was much much better!

CrochetBelle · 02/09/2018 22:52

Hold on, are you saying it was sticky plastic that was put over the tattoo?

Golde · 02/09/2018 22:54

That's too long. How's it looking now?

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 22:58

It wasn’t cling film- it was a square of plastic sheet that obviously had some sort of adhesive because it stuck down like a dressing.

The tattoo looks fine, no seeping or plasma or redness- it’s just the residual adhesive that’s causing the problem.

was it something like this stuff rather than clingfilm ?

Shmoope · 02/09/2018 23:00

As PP have said, 5 days is far too long for the (presumably) original cling film! Yikes!

Warm water to rinse off, pat dry with a clean towel. Bapanthen or oil (coconut or olive) afterwards.

After 5 days she's lucky that it's not horribly infected! That's awful advice from the tattoo artist.

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 23:09

-justlike- yes it was something like that. Not cling film- more like a proper dressing.

JustLikeBefore · 02/09/2018 23:18

it seems fairly new, so not many people know about it.

probably best if she gets intouch with the place she got her tatoo done.

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 23:26

Yes, she’s going to ring them tomorrow. It’s actually healed beautifully- much faster than her other one.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 02/09/2018 23:26

Too long for the dressing to stay on. Why did she not listen to the artists aftercare advice?

BertrandRussell · 02/09/2018 23:27

She did listen. That’s why she left it on for 5 days. Maybe read the thread?

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 02/09/2018 23:29

I’ve got a lot of tattoos from different artists and have NEVER been advised to leave a dressing on for that length of time. No need to be so rude.

LilahTheTiger · 02/09/2018 23:37

People here are a bit out of date. Wet healing is a great innovation, will leave you with a a beautiful sharp tattoo. I expect the dressing was saniderm, in which case 5 days could be a bit soon, as 7-9 is usual.

There's a good guide here. Definitely call the artist tomorrow, and don't scrub or pick at it

MarthaArthur · 02/09/2018 23:41

Yeah im always advised to take the cover off after a couple of hours.

Anyway mild foaming face wash is what im always advised to use to wash any gunk off the tatt. Then pat dry with a clean towel and apply palmers hard oil stuff in the white tub.

BertrandRussell · 03/09/2018 00:02

“No need to be so rude“

You asked why she didn’t listen to the tattoo artist’s advice. I had already said that she had followed the advice she had been given - in writing. In the circumstances, there is nothing rude about suggesting you read the thread..
