DVT diagnosis

Hi, grateful for any advice I have just got back from A and E with a DVT leaflet and have been injected in the stomach with a blood thinner.

I have to call to go back for a scan tomorrow to confirm but I just feel a bit lost? I have told my job I won’t be in tomorrow but after that I don’t know what’s normal?

My leg is really sore and there is such conflicting information online some people go back after a few days others after a month and then only part time which is scaring me!

Advice says take it easy go for short walks but that is very subjective!

Has this happened to anyone else? I am 31 so did not get think I was old enough for this to happen but I guess it can happen to anyone!

My job also involves driving all over the country, one of my risk factors was having driven to Scotland and back the week before so I am worried that is what causes it and it obviously happening again. I like my life is about to implode or this might kill me one or the other!

Your life won't implode.

I had one (calf) twenty years ago, but care probably similar now.

I was put on daily Warfarin, with a blood test once a week. Gentle exercise. All longer journeys since then I break them up, and I make sure my calf muscles are 'pumping' at least every hour.

I did find that my big old 4x4 car's clutch hurt, so since then I've had automatics. I can still drive manuals, just git lazy now.

The hospital will investigate why the DVT occurred. In my case it turned out I have something called Factor V Leiden (blood clotting issue). I've not had a DVT since then.

Hi thank you, how long were you on the warfarin for? Did you have to take any time off work?

I’m worried about telling people, certainty don’t want to tell my parents I think the worry would kill them!

My dad who is 68 had just had his second one. They are worried why he has had two unprovoked episodes. They've done blood tests and think he may have prostate cancer. We are all worried sick.

If I remember right it was 3-6 months (a long time ago!).

I was a SAHM but don't remember not being able to take care of them.

I think it's completely normal to feel scared.

CherryPavlova · 02/09/2018 21:43

I had 16 in my arm whilst on chemotherapy. I had daily jabs for six months but as it was chemo related didn’t need warfarin. I didn’t miss any work. Why would you?
You might not even have one, so wait and see maybe?

madasamarchhare · 02/09/2018 21:44

Can I ask what prompted you to seek medical attention. What were your symptoms that led to dvt?
I have had a really achey thigh for no obvious reason. Very aware of it most days sometimes it’s better during the course of the day. I remember my dad having a dvt in his thigh which is where my concern comes from. Sadly he died some years ago from unrelated causes so he is not here to ask what his symptoms were.

MrsMozart · 02/09/2018 21:51

Mine was like pins and needles in my calf for a couple of days, no pain.

Woke up on the third morning in agony. No redness or swelling. My GP proposed DVT and hospital confirmed it.

CherryPavlova · 02/09/2018 21:54

My arm swelled to twice it’s usual size and went a mottled purple colour. I lost feeling in my fingers and my arm felt like it was made of lead.

DVTdiagnosis · 02/09/2018 22:05

Hi everyone thank you, hopefully this won’t affect me too much then.

I am just worried about work because at the moment unless it is elevated it aches/throbs and is quite painful. I am walking around but litttle and often and then I rest and elevate it again.

Symptom wise yesterday I went for a walk not a long one only about 3.5 miles picked some blackberries on the way. When I got home I noticed an area on my leg on the left hand side at the top of the calf felt hard, hot and a bit itchy. Thought nothing of it as I get bitten a lot by horse flys on walks in the summer and they normally swell up quite a lot.

I had leggings on so did not actually look at my leg until a bit later. When I did I could not see any bite mark and it just looked different to how it normally looks when I had a bite. Even though DVT was in the back of my mind because I had all the symptoms and I had been on a long drive the week before I took an antihistamine and hoped it would get better.

This morning when I woke up it had got worse almost all of my top calf was hot and hard and a bit red so I called 111, went to out of hours GP at local hospital, GP thought it wears cellulitis, I was not convinced and he told me he could not be 100% it was not DVT and if I wanted he would write me a letter to take to A&E.

I took the letter to A&E got seen and the doctor could see small mark on my leg and thought it was a scratch from brambles picking blackberries and was probably an infection. I really did not feel like it was an infection due to the throbbing/pulsing I was feeling now and asked for them to do blood tests and that came backs with elevated d-dimer levels which indicates a clot somewhere.

I knew as soon as I saw the doctors face when she opened the door to call be in as she had been so light and breezy before.

Anyway sorry that was long but I wanted to share my symptoms and the fact I nearly got sent home twice with antibiotics!

Thank you all, sorry dvt for taking over your thread a little. I really don’t think mine is dvt then I think I’m just tired and a bit rundown.
Dvt I hope you get some answers about what you ahould and shouldn’t be doing and are back to normal soon.

MrsMozart · 02/09/2018 22:15

madasa go get checked Put your mind at rest.

DVTdiagnosis · 02/09/2018 22:24

Yes I agree, best to put your mind at rest, and it appears the symptoms can be quite varied! I was just lucky that mine matched the NHS website so I kept pushing!

OP posts:
MrsMozart · 02/09/2018 22:35

DVT Glad you pushed!

DVTdiagnosis · 02/09/2018 22:50

Me to, it was just weird to push for something you don’t actually bloody want!

What meds are you on? I got Rivoraxabin, better than Warfarin as no blood tests needed. Mine was due to being immobile after an operation and not being given any blood thinning injections. Rivoraxabin (sp?) is fairly new.

CherryPavlova · 02/09/2018 23:41

A raised d dimmer doesn’t necessarily mean a clot. A low d dimmer excludes a clot rather than the other way around.

CherryPavlova · 02/09/2018 23:41

Sorry that should be dimer but autocorrected.

Leliana · 03/09/2018 00:18

@DVTdiagnosis, a raised D-dimer does not indicate you definitely have a clot. There are various causes, including infection and inflammation. All it means is that a clot can't be ruled out. Wait for your scan result before worrying about the long-term ramifications. You may not have a DVT.

DVTdiagnosis · 03/09/2018 01:04

Hi, thanks everyone can’t sleep keep reading stuff on the internet.. the syringe says clexane? Never heard of it before.

It would be great if they said is was ‘just’ an infection tomorrow, it just feels so connected to my circulatory system? When I elevate it the pain subsides and when I put it down to walk it throbs.
