Guest bed or no guest bed!

Hugely fascinating third world problem.

I've spent many, many hours working out what to do with guest beds and I can't decide. So hive mind...

3 bed house, us and 2dc. One room each, one is large, one is medium. My parents come to visit a few times a year. Plan is to move both dc into smaller room when people come to stay. Do I go for:

Option 1 - single bed and ikea daybed in large room with spare mattress or trundle bed under bed in smaller room. Will be a squeeze to get a desk in when dc1 needs it in a few years.
Option 2: trundle beds under beds in both rooms (do they get dusty?). Parents might not find getting on/off trundle easy.
Option 3: two singles in larger room and parents will have to sleep separately when they come. Best option re space as don't need to be able to extend the bed.

Any options I've forgotten? I don't really want bunk beds.

Ikea Kura for the smaller room? Under bed play area, den etc most of the year and enough room for a child to occassionally sleep underneath.

Day bed for larger room?

BrazzleDazzleDay · 02/09/2018 17:27

Id personally get trundles for both rooms. Super useful for future sleepovers and guests.

Watching with interest. Only have the one kiddo but have been reserving the bigger room as a 'guest' room. Probably get guests once or twice a year. I'm thinking of just utilising it and paying for an Air BnB or hotel on the off chance anyone stays over.

We’ve been through similar and have now decided that we need space which works for the people who live here. Family now stay at air b&b/local hotel or not at all. We could also have a tent in the garden we’ve used once. It’s not perfect but it does have some benefits...

DS2 has a trundle which was DS1's so getting quite old now (new mattress and refurbed the frame recently)

I haven't noticed that it get's dusty too much

Two identical, good quality singles in the large room can be joined together using a superking mattress protector and sheet, and you can then put superking bedding on it. But I don't understand why 2 singles in there will take up less room than 1 double!

greenlanes · 02/09/2018 18:00

We had a trundle bed in DC room. Full size single that had legs that it took it up to normal bed height. Seemed a good idea but you have to have full space to be able to pull it out straight from under the other bed. Ours was heavy - good quality bed and mattress so weighed a ton!

I have now given up with it and put it in the spare room on its side so not pretty.

whats the downstairs like?

Can there be a sofa bed somewhere downstairs or a murphy bed

Otherwise a trundle in the large room (one of those ones that makes a double) and an airbed for the extra child in the small one, or one of those futon company roll out mats

fraggle84 · 02/09/2018 18:06

We were in a very similar position and got the trundles.

If I could go back I'd have got s double for the big room and trundle for the smaller

Much more flexible

CatOwned · 02/09/2018 18:10

Is the larger room large enough to fit a confy sofa bed that the children could use as a sofa when no guests are staying?

I also second the idea of trundle beds. Hopefully keeping it covered with a sheet will keep most of the dust away from the matress.

TheChatsPyjamas · 02/09/2018 18:11

We have the Ikea tarva daybed with the firmer mattress option (maybe moshult? They’re not pure foam) and they’re comfy to sleep on stacked on top of each other.

I like the look of noa and Nani daybeds as they can be either a double or separate singles.

seven201 · 02/09/2018 18:37

We've just bought a (second hand) John Lewis trundle bed for the big room for similar reasons. The second bed raises up. Was £80 plus new mattresses. I nearly bought a new one from bensons for beds for £300 in the sale. Really good quality.

scaryteacher · 02/09/2018 18:56

Don't see what's wrong with two singles. When we go to stay with dm, dh and I are in her spare room, which has two singles.

Perhaps a bed with another under for the small room so ds can be moved when your parents come to stay.

KindergartenKop · 02/09/2018 18:57

You can get singles which have a 'tall' trundle so turn into a double- that for bigger room, normal trundle for smaller one.

UniversalTruth our trundle doesn't get dusty.

UniversalTruth · 02/09/2018 21:48

@seven201I like this plan, thank you. I've just looked on eBay and there are quite a few single > double trundle type beds near me so that's the top option right now.

@TheHonGalahadThreepwood I was going to put the singles at right angles. However, taking on board your comment, I have actually realised that a double bed is smaller than I thought cos I'm an idiot so I will definitely be looking at this as an option. Thanks all.

We have 2 ikea Brimnes beds and they are pretty good. No issue sleeping on the two mattresses at all. We got them to replace bunk beds and visually they look like they take up less room because of the height (or lack of it). One thing to consider is the size when opened as it is bigger than a double bed, and also quite low.

I was considering one for our smallest room, but on reflection we wouldn't be able to pull it out without moving other furniture out the way which would be a pain.

I am starting to think a small double will be the best option, have you thought of that? I thought it would be too small for two adults to sleep comfortably, but on chatting to a friend about it she said I had slept in one at her house with another friend. I had assumed it was normal double and don't recollect being squashed in at all.
