Laptop for 10 year old

DD2 has asked for a laptop for birthday/Christmas (her birthday is in 3 weeks) but I'm so confused.

A lot in my budget (was looking up to £250 ideally but would consider a bit more) are Chrome-books, which I know nothing about. I don't know how the storage works with such a small hard drive. I know online storage is an option - but which one?

Touchscreen would be good as that's what she's used to with tablets, I think ...

Any advice would be great (ideally I just want someone to tell me definitively what to buy!).

My ten year old has an ipad and has used it a great deal-games,google etc. I am not sure whether this is within your budget?

Don’t get a chromebook!
You can’t store anything on them. You can barely install anything on them. They are a glorified mobile phone. It’s all in the cloud. Is she used to google docs? Or more Microsoft word etc? How old is she?

she specifically wants a laptop, I think she might actually want to work on it Shock. She does have access to my iPad.

Just seen she’s 10.

What is she going to use it for? Games and apps? Websites? Get a tablet. Word processing and homework? Cheap hp laptop will do. It’ll last a couple of years ready for replacement when she’s doing her gcses’!

She's 10 and I assume at school they use office.

homework and maybe some coding ...

Definitely not a chrome book then. Have you got a John Lewis near you? They’ve got quite a few reduced.

not too far away - I'll have a look online.

I'm just terrible at making decisions!

what would you say would be the minimum hard drive that I should go for?

Should I drop the requirement for touch screen?

i personally don't like chrome books. i prefer the brand lenovo, i use a laptop by that brand and i am very pleased with it. it is touchscreen.

Thanks sleep - just not sure if 32GB is too low for storage -

I was told to avoid touch screen unless you were planning on spending lots!

I got DD one which has windows operating and I hate it! It's clunky but maybe that's how they are now

ninja · 02/09/2018 11:48

I'm used to Macs - so pretty useless when navigating windows - her big sister should be able to help her with that though ...

John Lewis tends to be better for service on problems although not always.
PCWorld has some good offers and you can often get cash back sites on them too.
Online can be cheaper but potential issue with service and you can see and touch before. SCAN and Ebuyer are my main places

For that budget and age I would drop the touchscreen resolution.

Many do packs of laptop and MS office which can be a saving.

With that budget you are looking at,
Intel i3 processor
8 - 32 gb RAM
On board intel graphics
500gb of HDD - hard drive

ninja · 02/09/2018 13:23

Thanks @UplLighter, something like this?

Nice machine for the costs. Reviews seems reasonable.
Will she be expected to move it around and take it into school? It is pretty big.

ninja · 02/09/2018 17:32

hmm - she moves between her dad and my house but to be honest I'd rather she didn't cart it too much ... I'll have another look Thanks
